Colt SP1 Value/Collectability

I have a Colt SP1 that was made in 1973 that I bought a few years ago as a collectible. It has been fired but is in excellent condition with a very low round count. Lately I have been wanting a range/plinking AR and had considered just buying a new upper to put on the Colt lower I already have. Am I better off just buying a totally new rifle or will shooting the lower more affect the value or future value of the gun?
