Load Data Help 223 Rem

I am looking to check load data for bullets I just ordered. They are Sierra 65 Grain Boat Tail Spitzer - I have and can find no data for 65 grain 224 rounds.
Looking at the Lyman Manual I have and splitting the difference between 63 and 69 grain rounds I am looking to start 25 grains of Varget loaded to OAL of 2.260 and max load of 26.5 grains (just to be safe - Of course I would not go that high if there were signs of over presure).

I am a very new loader (shot my first batch of loads this week) to be working loads without direct data but I have a purpose for this round and I want to be safe. Feedback and cautions please and thanks.

Side Note: I am now a loading addict - It is all I can do to not go back to the bench and load the rest of my brass ( I need to shoot the loads I have before I load more) - Is there any hope for me or am I doomed to the darkside forever?

Dan,
Get yourself a lee reload manual, by richard lee,There is a volume 1 and 2 get them both,they are very helpfull and will give you a varity fo data with several powders. In my book the best manuals you can have on the bench!

I'm looking at Sierra's software, and I'm not seeing a 65 grain bullet at all.

I have loaded their 69 grain matchking up to 26 grains with Varget for my AR-15... OAL was 2.260. My accuracy load was a tad lower (25.6 grains), but this one was still close to max. Started seeing the primers flatten at 26.

With a bullet 4 grains lighter, you should be safe up to 26 grains, but as always, work up slowly and pay attention.

Charge: Minimum - 22.8, 2600 fps / Max Charge - 26.3, 3100 fps.

I don't have data on that bullet either, but I'd start around 24gr. Have you loaded with Varget yet? I just tried it tonight and hate it. It metered fine, but every now and then it got stuck as it fell through the powder measure and poured out after the case was moved. It made a mess. I've read good things about it but I won't be buying it again. W748 meters like water and fires great. I think I'll stick with it.

My Sierra #5 manual has no data for their 65gr 224 bullet in either the AR-15 or Bolt action sections. Their web site does say the this bullet requires a 1-7 to 1-10 twist barrel. What is your twist rate?

Midway down the page you will find a link to the Sierra manual. There are 2 one for bolt guns one for ARs. I did not see a 65 Grain listed but you can use the the data for the 63 and work it up slowly.

Just got back from hunting coyotes this weekend, and saw your post. I thought I was the only one who used this bullet. I always shot 69gr. Sierras for punching paper, but that bullet is not a hunting bullet, so I found a bullet close to that weight for hunting "yotes" I use the same data for the 65 that I did for the 69. Since it is lighter it is safe in this case. My favorite for this bullet is 24.5 gr. of AA2230 and it is lights out in my Savage Predator. 1:9 twist. Good luck!

It seems to be a newer bullet that's not in the Sierra load guide. You should be able to email or call Sierra and get load data for it.

I'll second Steve's advice above (Zombie Steve). You can always use the load data for a heavier bullet. Remember that powder charges decrease as bullet weights increase, thus the ability to use a slightly heavier bullet's charge data and be in the safe zone. Use the same COL also, which will theoretically give you a tad more volume behind the projectile. There are some profile differences which could negate or even reduce the volume, but in theory you would be in the same ballpark.

And as if it hasn't been stressed enough, always work up your loads.

Get yourself a loadbook for .223. Bets $6 you'll spend. One book will give you all the projectile/powder combinations for the caliber. Midway has em.
