Smith and Wesson Model 28
My father gave his father one of these 28's about 30 years ago as a Christmas present. My grandfather recently passed away and his wife asked my father if he would like the gun back as she has no use for it. Since my father lives out of the country he is giving it to me.
I was wondering if anyone on the forums here owns or has at least shot one of these and could give me some feedback on how they shoot, good loads to shoot, problems encountered with the gun, etc. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had one for several years. One of the most accurate revolvers I've ever owned & before the L-frames, the ONLY S&W I'd fire magnums in. I also liked the finish more than the highly-polished 27. The only thing it needs is a larger rubber grip.

Great revolver and generally excellent triggers.
Aside from constant fast DA shooting, it's very hard to hurt these guns.

The first new S&W revolver I ever bought was a 6" S&W M-28-2. I shot the hound out of it using every sort of .357 Magnum round I could get my hands on. For the four years I was in school I fired it every weekend... at least several hundred rounds of homeloaded ammo each range session. The think was as tight as a bank vault even four years and a wheelbarrow load of ammo later. Since then I've owned 7 more M-28 revolvers. The one I have now is a repeat of that first revolver... a 6" 28-2 With beautiful factory target stocks. It is one of the most accurate revolvers I have ever fired. It has a double-action pull that is like pulling your finger through soft butter. It has given perfect faultless accurate service since 2000. I expect that it will be with me to the end. I consider the S&W N frame revolvers to be some of the most finely designed and engineered handguns ever produced. The M-28 is just about the best of the best. Other than the level of polish, it is in every way the equal of the M-27. Mine often goes with me into the woods in a El Paso Saddlery Tom Threepersons holster. It is a delightful companion for the woods and a excellent choice for all round shooting. This is of course my own opinion. But, it is an opinion many share. Once you get your revolver in hand, you will understand why the M-28 is so very well loved and respected. Cheers!

I've had mine for 20+ years. I put a set of Hogue finger groove rubber grips on it and it shoots like a dream.
It's built like a tank and will shoot the hottest .357 mag load without beating you up.

The only thing that could make it better would be if S&W would sell the 8 round cylinders they put in their .357 N frame performance guns.

have one myself and agree they are great guns. if you do replace the stocks be sure to save the old ones- from that era they will be serial numbered to match the gun. as a family heirloom I doubt you would sell the gun but keep those grips with the gun for it certainly adds value later on

Congratulations! Wow what a gift, you are going to have so much fun with that revolver.
I have a model 28-2 w/6" barrel - Great N frame revolver! When you pick that puppy up you know you have a serious gun in your hands. Shoots strait & true, I love the sights.
The only thing I did was to change the grips out to a Houge grip - the pistol style rubber grip makes this a much more enjoyable gun to shoot.
