I am getting a Lone Wolf Compensator and have found out it is made of mild steel. I originally wanted to give it a mirror finish to it with some mothers mag polish like I have done to the LW barrel. However, the barrel is stainless steel and the compensator is mild steel. I heard mild steel can be polished but will rust very easy. Does it really only rust in outside conditions? This is only a range gun. How can one prevent rust once polished? Or is this not the route to do

Also, if it is recommended to not polish, I would want to black it out. What is the cheapest/most effective way to go about doing that given the material?

It will rust very quickly if you don't put somethhingon teh bare steel. Cheapest would be to have it blued, best would be to plate it with nickel, etc.

If I were to polish it, would cleaning after use and putting a little oil on it keep it rust free? Also what causes it to rust so quick if kept stored inside, just normal atmosphere conditions or exposure to oxygen?

Also what would be the total cost to have this hard chromed or polished nickel?

Bare steel will be hard to take care of. Even if you clean it all the time and put oil on it there will always be the possibility of rust forming due to even slight condensation from temperature and humidity changes.
Also you will have to be concerned with the internal parts and the unexposed sides of the external parts.
If it is just one piece such as a compensator it will be easier, but then again why not get the one peice plated or coated and never have to worry about it?
It can't be all that expensive.

Maybe a coat of clear over the polished slide? Don't know how well it would stick maybe a couple of coats would do.

You could try rust bluing it.
