Norinco Mak 90 question

Without removing the stock, jhow can I tell if the receiver is a straight or angle cut?
It is a sheet metal receiver.

Reciever

I went down the basement to take a look at mine to see if there is a way to tell but I don't see how it can be done, maybe someone else will be able to help out. I take it you want to get rid of the thumbhole stock? I had the stocks off both mine after I bought them and do remember both being straight.

Lay the rifle down on the ground. It doesn't matter which side is up, but for the sake of description, put it with the charging handle up with the barrel pointing to your right.

This is what an angle cut receiver looks like. Look at the stock/receiver joint.

Here is a straight cut receiver. Note the 90 degree angle at the bottom left corner of the receiver.

Not necessarily(assuming that you are going by the pic posted). The stock pictured on the slant looks exactly like one of the stocks also used on many straight receivers. The straights were much more common. It's only 3 screws to remove the stock, less than 5 minutes off and back on.

Here is a straight cut receiver, look familiar?

Remove the stock. It comes off quite easily.

With the stock removed, this is what a straight cut receiver looks like.

This will help.

As was said you might well have to remove the stock if you have one of the type of thumbhole stocks which covers up part of the bottom of the receiver. On many thumbhole stocks the fact that they receiver is straight is obvious.

California Black Walnut. I bought this rifle at a pawn shop in Corpus Christi, Texas in 2000. $175 OTD (complete with discarded thumb hole stock)

Talk about RARE. Last I heard the ATF "rounded up" all the bad AK receivers.

There is only one other factory importer event that is rarer.

There was a guy selling a 3rd hole mak 90 on gun broker a few years ago.
He got so mad at all the emails about his rifle being contraban that he withdrew the auction and left the post reminding everyone they were obviously wrong because he bought it from a respectable dealer. LOL

Yes inside the forward Y stamp
And some people argue that saiga can't possibly be anywhere near milspec quality but hey it came off the same assembly line. I wouldn't say this is overwhelming proof but its hard to argue against. In this case, someone pulled receivers from the wrong pile probably because they looked nearly identical before assembled and no one caught it even going all the way through US customs and the importer. Go figure.

Mine doesn't have the forward Y stamping.

EDIT: looking through old photos of my WASR, it had the forward Y stamping.
