I'd be willing to bet the answer is going to be no, but it's worth asking! I have relatives in NY (state, not city), and it would be nice to be able to carry there. My VA CHP should be here in a week or so, and I can get a UT or FL CCW if that would make a difference for NYS.

I'm not going to bring up NYC as you said you weren't going to NYC. They have some different rules.

Sorry. You have to have a NYS permit to handle or possess a handgun in NYS. (exceptions for competition/training/traveling through to another state aside). Basically you can't if you are just visiting and you shouldn't risk it.


I run into the same thing when I visit places like Boston and other unfriendly non-res states. My apologies, I really do wish it was different for our out of town guests. Other states trust us with our CCW, we should do the same.

There is no non-resident CCW. I know it's not fair and we have a couple of groups in NYS that are working hard at trying to change the laws.

U can carry in Nasssau County NY (downstate), and not in Buffalo or NYC with the Nassau County permit

Federal LEO's are defined as Peace Officers under 2.10 of the CPL.

And no, NYS doesn't recognize out of state permits.

LEOSA covers any LEO as defined in that legislation and its recent amendments. Other than that, competitions only, as defined in state law, and even that is pretty restrictive as far as going right to the match, immediately leaving and not stopping anywhere in the state in between, carrying a match bulletin, etc.
