llama 1911 .45

i've found a guy selling his llama 1911 .45 for 300. good deal? i'm waiting to hear back how many rounds through it and how old the gun is.
is this a good deal? should i make this my one christmas gift? or should i pass on it and spend my cash elsewhere... save up for something else.
i want it to be reliable enough to use at the range and at the bedside. i have my g19 for edc.

Hell no. They sold new for that and are not worth the $50 that you would get in a buy back program.

That's not a 1911. Some parts are compatable, some aren't.

If I were you, I'd shell out another $100 or so and get an RIA.

Llama's had questionable quality control to boot.

i wasn't super excited for it, but i'd never seen a 1911 in .45 for 300 or less. i'd heard of llama, and was just wondering if it would be at least a good deal. sounds like it's not worth the 250 i'd haggled with the guy. yea... i'll hold out. i don't even really want a 1911 right now, just some day.

I find some Llamas interesting, like this Omni, but I've never been much of a fan of their 1911-style pistols.

I agree with everyone's comments. My dad has had one for quite some time that my grandpa gave to him and it has been alright, but nothing special and imo not the best bang for your buck. Like everyone else said, it isnt a true 1911

i'm glad i waited for feedback from gt. i had the guy down to 250 and decided i needed feedback from some more competent folks. the seller didn't seem to know anything about his gun. couldn't give me a round count, age of the gun, or any information at all. just kept saying it shoots fine.

I have two Llama .45s. One is a 1977 IX-A (w/ engraving) and the other is a MAX-I .45 C/F. I also have a MINIMAX .45 on its way as well. The MAX-I .45 C/F is a fantastic shooter and is 1911 compatible. The MINIMAX .45 is also 1911 compatible (except for some pieces).

$300 is not unreasonable if it is like new. I would try to get it at a better price if that is what you want. Personally, with the going price of a used RIA 1911 .45 these days, I would try and go that route.

Since it has lots of wear, I would look elsewhere. If you are on a limited budget, shop the GT classifieds for a used RIA. You can even find new RIAs for around $400 more or less.

I haven't shot one, but I had a couple requests from a local gun shop to make grips for the Llamas. The guys that had them said that they were pretty nice for the price and they have a lifetime warranty. Don't know for sure or not if it still is. Definitely isn't a 1911, take a look at these grips, see the difference. One guy bought three sets.. haha. I guess its hard to find custom wood grips for Llamas.

Had one in the 90's with lots of wear. Not reliable at all. I would think you can save a little more money and get something nice.

I had a Minimax .45, bought it new in 2005 from Academy on sale for $180.00. I tried everything to get that gun to feed ammo, and it was notorious for jamming, refusing to cycle and stove piping.

After a couple hundred rounds, I gave up and gave it to my son. Think he gave up also and traded it at a gun show......

Paid $199 new for my Llama in the '80's......worked 100% but traded it on a Gold Cup. They are hit and miss on quality. I also has a Star PD that was 100% and sold it.....don't regret it too much but was a great carry gun in the early 80's. Mags were hard to find for both, Mike.

That would be a rather lengthy list in itself. I am picky about what I put into my collection. Take the Llamas for instance, I pick and choose what I deem important to me. The latest one I got was the MINIMAX .45. The original owner (a gunsmith) did a bit of upgrade work to it. It made it a better pistol. I still need to get the Llama MAX L/F-.45. I would also like to find a Llama .45 like I had originally back in 1986.

Yeah, 1911 grips usually don't fit Llamas, because they aren't 1911s.

As far as a warrenty is concerned, who is going to honor it?

Save your money and get a RIA. I just picked a used RIA Commander w/4 mags and Pachmayer presentation grips for $300.00. Gun looks new. The grips alone go for $45.00
