AK 47 Cleaning Rod Question?

I have another AK47 noob question. I ordered a cleaning rod (milled cleaning rod) from Copes and got it in the mail last night. I tried to install it on my WASR-10 and could not get it to screw in all the way. Not really sure if I'm just not doing it right or if this rod is to long for my rifle. I've used the search function and couldnt come up with anything. So I'm asking for help from the experts. Thanks in advance.

Do you still have the original wood furniture on the rifle?

No I don’t but I'm picking up a set this weekend from a local sale. After about an hour of searching I found a thread from last summer from a GT member with the same issue it suggested that he put a little more force into getting it to clear the rear of handguard, he didn’t have the original furniture on the rifle as well. I will try to use a little more force as suggested. I wanted it more for looks than anything else. Thanks for the reply maxxmojo. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Below is suggestion I found:<o:p></o:p>
Relax the flex in the rod as it goes through the lower handguard causes it to catch. Sit down and hold the rifle in your right or left hand, but on the ground, thumb behind the top of the gas block, fingers giving the rod under the barrel your kung fu grip, which flexes the rod as you push it down, and allows it to clear the rear of the handguards where it is catching. <o:p></o:p>

Yeah sometimes they require a little extra effort to get them in all the way, glad you got yours in. There's nothing more annoying than a cleaning rod sticking out on an AK.

Do you have to flex the rod up toward the barrel or out away from the barrel to get it to clear the handguard? Or, do you just push the rod in really hard?

I pulled it a little away from the barrel and then with my thumbs I pushed down on the top of the rod and it went right into place. The first time I tried it I was worried about putting too much force into it, then the second time I used a little more force and it worked. Let me know if this helps.
