narrowing down the list of possible first 1911

Gents,

Looking to purchase my first 1911 sometime 2011. Initially I was thinking I'd be choosing between a Kimber Custom TLE or Royal or a Springfield Armory Loaded. However as I lurk on the 1911 forums I'm noticing the STI Trojan is getting a lot of positive reivews as is the Springfield Range Officer. So I ask you between these 3 or 4 manufacturers and models what are the pros and cons? I'll probably have around $1,000 to spend toward it. Also, where does Colt fit in? Seems to be that the quality has gone up and down over the years? Where do their 1911's compare with the others I've mentioned?

I know of course the best thing would be to get them all in my hands and try to shoot as many as possible. Unfortunately the local shops I do my window shopping don't carry many, if any 1911s, much less have any at the local ranges to rent. So I rely on you for suggestions.

Thanks in advance for your answers, help and suggestion to this and my follow up questions.

STI Trojan and Springfield Range Officer would be my 2 picks. if you don't like MIM in the fire control parts, then get the STI. if you want a forged frame, get the Range Officer.

I'm not a COlt or Kimber fan.

Quack- Thanks for the advice. Let me show my ignorance as I must admit owning and shooting firearms is a new hobby/lifestyle I've gotten into just this year. I understand these are probably elementary questions but you got to learn the baaics sometime right?

1) What are MIM parts?
2) What is the difference between a forged frame and unforged (for lack of a better term)?

If I was buying a one and only 1911, as my "only" (yeah right ), 1911, then I would start with the Kimber Stainless TLE.

It always depends on what you need it for. You'll find that with 1911's if your not careful you begin to justify spending a lot of money so be careful and you have been warned.

For <$1k, I'd go with the STI Trojan. Hard to beat. If you plan on carrying look at the STI Ranger2. Same price.

MIM parts are Metal Injection Moulding. which (if made poorly) is prone to breakage. It's really a non-issue, but to some it matters.

forged vs. cast is another personal preference and is a non-issue.

I do really like the looks of the Stainless TLE. I really was thinking whatever I picked I'd try to to get it in Stainless but for whatever reason I really like the looks of that STI Trojan even though its blued. Now a Stainless Trojan would fit the bill! I've seen a few pictures of the chromed Trojans from other GT's and they look great! However, I don't think I'll have the extra $300 in my 1911 budget to pick that option.

Sounds like you answered your own question. The TLE was built for Tactical Law Enforcement agencies. It's one of the better Kimbers out there. Especially for the money. I have a STI Legacy and completely recognize the quality of STI 1911's, but I personally think that the Kimber Stainless TLE is the best gun for the money on the market.

STI Ranger in 45ACP
SA Range Officer
STI Trojan

That's my order of choices.

The Range Officer would be my pick ,they're are fitted to TRP standards. First though, I'd look at a lightly used Dan Wesson. They're are some incredible deals to be had on older DW's if you look enough.

with Bac's collection his word certainly does carry a lot of weight.

Thanks for the responses thus far. I really like the idea of buying my first 1911 on its 100 year anniversary, although I'm still toying with the idea of getting an AR first since I have a bad feeling one of these days they will be completely illegal to own I figure I better get one to grandfather in!

Are their huge differences between the STI Trojan, SA Range Officer and Kimber TLE? Or is it mainly brand prefernce sort of like Glock vs SA XD vs S&W M&P?

I can't speak for the STI but the Kimber and the SA are totally different flavors of 1911. The SA has the target sights and is more of a range type gun. The Kimber is more of a "Tactical" gun with combat sights and a rail. The STI looks to be in the middle and has great quality from what I've read here. I haven't seen an STI that I like the looks of or I'd get one.
