Great, you saved me from opening a can.

It's like a fire extinguisher, only to be opened in case of emergencies!

Actually, its a bit greasy, unhealthy at least eating it at one sitting isnt a good idea and kind of fattening.

So, once you open can, you're committed to finishing it and that would take me 3 days to a week and I'd be sick of it by then, not to mention the killer farts. Living alone I have no one to torture with them.

We use treet a few times a week, rotation is key.Fry some up with taters and bottle up the all the natural gas youse can.We are looking for the fats that this product produces,we'll balance out it's use accordingly. We have a ton of tuna/in oil for the same reason. We use the lowered sodium version.'08.

I always rotate, but I think rotation is less key with spam like products than anything else, due to the 3+ years or more long shelf life.

Someone on here posted something to the effect of either experience or comment from someone at hormel that in theory the stuff will NEVER go bad, and some has survived for a decade or more. I wouldn't want to test this out or be the first to taste it, just sayin...it can hang out longer than anything else I can think of except maybe dried pasta and even that can get brittle.

I would hope that Spam doesn't go bad, or at least that it would take an awfully long time to do so. It is, after all, canned.

I can attest to spam being well spam, after close to 7 years.

wasn't any different than regular spam, we cut it up, threw it in the mac n cheese and went to town.

Both the canned albacore tuna and wild king salmon have shelf lives of approximately 8-10 years! In fact, the longer you are able to store your cans before eating them the better! By letting the cans slightly age, the natural juices and oils can settle into the fish, which increases its soft flakey texture. The shellfish we carry have a shelf life of 2-3 years. There is no apparent expiration date on each can; the expiration date is found within the cannery code.

I would bet that Spam is even longer than tuna because it's all about preservatives and I think that spam is the winner there. Now if we could nuke it like some countries do it would last forever because the bacteria would not be inhibited but removed completely.

spam shelf life and a few others by google research

Dinty Moore
Spam

Ham Chunks

Chili

Dried Beef
Indefinite

Indefinite life span for the above. Just make sure the can doesn't bulge and/or it doesn't smell.

Me - this week. I spent 5 hours in the dental chair doing crown lengthening. I go back tomorrow to have an 8 year old implant tightened down and to remove stitches on the crown lengthening.

If you think that you will play dentist after shtf, you have about as much chance as starring with Sylvester Stalone in the next Rambo movie. Get the dental and medical work done now.

I also will be taking a portion of stored, 30 year old survival food to charity. I have fresher stuff.

Do you remember my post about making a filter with clay, coffee grounds and heated with cow dung?

It is not a white trash way, it is a third world way. And it is suppose to work.

Volsbear: G. Washington produced 11,000 gallons of white lightening in 1799. The common stuff sold for $.50 a gallon and the good stuff for $1 a gallon. The Mount Vernon distillery is now reconstructed and allowed to produce 5000 gallons a year by the State of Virginia and serve it on the grounds of Mount Vernon. Time for you to take a sightseeing trip.

Is there any point to distilling your own water in an ordinary, non-SHTF world? I looked it up. It looks time consuming and looks like it would burn quite a bit of natural gas. At 90 cents per gallon at the store, buying it seems cheaper.

It looks like you are doing something different than I had in mind.

Why are you distilling water?

My kid's humidifier and my CPAP machine. I looked into doing myself here at my house but the common method seems to be boiling water, running the steam through a tube into another container, and then discarded what isn't evaporated. But that seems expensive compared to the 90 cents per gallon at the store.

Depending on how severe your Apnea is you might want to check into an Oral Appliance as a back up. Loosing weight will also help but you probably already know that - and that may happen if things really get FUBAR'd.

I had rotated in some freeze dried foods last year. Today, I gave 6 cases of older stock to the local food bank.

Some people go to a lot of trouble to construct special shelves and may try to remember to rotate food stock. I do my rotation more simply. I donate the food as part of my charitable contributions. Given my age, I might not have to be concerned about rotating the stock that I currently have stored.

I did exactly this with the lite spam today. Don't need to that again for at least a year. I don't know how trailer parks manage to survive, mac and cheese is just not how I remember it as a kid even with the additional spam added, plus shredded cheddar on top and crumbled potato chips on top of that and baked for 20 mins. Plus I browned the spam and house still smells funky.

Eat what you store, store what you eat - both aspects of the phrase should influence the other. We've gotten used to eating spam occasionally around here - it's not high quality meat, but the kids love it. Fact is I didn't care for it initially, but now it's 'not bad', and when the SHTF, that's one less thing we'll have to adapt to...
