$100 for a Mosin Nagant?
Buddy wants to get rid of it, is it a deal?

Not really, my local Dunhams has 91/30's on sale for $89 regularly. Carbines usually go for a bit more, but your standard 91/30 should be a sub $100 rifle, unless it is something special (i.e. Finn, Dragoon, etc.)

91/30 is $69.95 at Aim Surplus. http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?groupid=227
Then you have to pay shipping and a local transfer fee.
That gets you pretty close to or over $100.
So I wouldn't say it's a screaming deal, but it's not a bad price either.

Find out what model it is and then report back... if it is a run-of-the-mill Russian M91/30, that isn't a great deal. If it is a M91 or any unaltered Finn model, that is a steal. Everything else - post here and get some feedback

Check the bore out first. If it looks decent, get it.It should have the bayonet, cleaning kit and sling included.
I bought one but had to check 7 other hex receivers out first.I picked the best one.I can tell you this, if you have never shot one, you're in for a surprise.I spent the afternoon literally destroying steel pig targets at 100 yards with irons. My shoulder had some nice blue and black hues to it,easy to solve by getting a slip on rubber recoil pad.For the money, they are a heck of a fun rifle with plenty of power.
It may or may not be a steal but if you want a fun rifle, get it.

$80 is a much better price unless it's something special. At $100 you're not getting ripped off but not a steal either.

I remember then these things were $49 bucks but like everything else they're going up in price. Same thing happened to the K-31's and Yugo SKS's. Guess if it looks good with a nice bore you should grab it, the price can only go up.

$80-$120 depending on condition and what comes with it. Can be a fun firearm and some make decent hunters.

Cosmoline is really sensitive to heat i had a tokarev clip in a solid block of cosmoline just use a blow dryer on it and the stuff runs right off of it

I picked one up on a group buy a few months back for $89 with all the accessories (pouches, oil can, bayo, sling, etc...) and the stock had almost no blemishes. I heard they come in hex or round recivers and the condition of the stock can influence price. I've since refinished the stock, sent out the bolt for redesign and added an ATI mount for a traditional scope. Its a great shooter and surplus ammo is readily available....

The hex were pre world war 2, the round was during and after. Not a functional difference between the two. The hex is a little more rare so they cost a few dollars more. They may have a better chance of being nicer as quality control may have decreased during war time. The flip is that the hex are older so that is no more than a theory. I think you should get one of each.

if it's a 91/30 , going rate
if it's an m44, yeah, good deal
m38? if you don't want it,i will take it
if it's an m53, it's still a pretty good deal.
any photos? any markings?
one thing...the ammo is brutally corrosive! take some (i'm sure i'll get called names for this....) soapy water to dump down the barrel after shooting. it'll buy you time to get it home and clean it. barrel pitting is not fun.
