Old Sauer Charles Daly Drilling side-by-side

Sir,

I received the above mentioned shotgun as a gift from father-in-law who wanted to pass it along. Unfortunately the gun is in deplorable shape. HEAVY HEAVY rust and at first the gun would not even open (break-open action). My question pertains to how to effectievly remove this heavy rust safely and efficiently. I have tried WD40 and 0000 steel wool after saturating and soaking the gun for several days now...no real luck, rust just wont seem to come off. Gun is probably not worth alot, but at least cleaning the rust off and inside the bore would be nice to see if I would even like to have it refinished or not. Took several hours of soaking before the action would even open. I estimate this old double is probably 130+ years old. Would like to at least fix er up the best I am able. Any suggestions on how to proceed? MUCH appreciated
