This has come up before. I am no expert but from whatI gather, sabots need to be shot out of a rifled shotgun barrel so that the spin can stabilize the projectile in flight. Being merely pushed out of a smooth bore barrel makes the sabot wobble and inaccurate or inconsistant at the least.

Rifled slugs on the other hand are better suited for smooth bore because the spiral cuts on the projectile body allow high speed air to pass through them and create somewhat of a spin. Any amount of spin should provide some decent and consistant accuracy on a shotgun slug.

Obviously a sabot with some serious spin from a rifled choke or rifled barrel will have greater accuracy.

I could be wrong though?

Now I dont know what would happen if you shot a rifled slug out of a rifled barrel? Would the rifling on the slug match up automatically with the rifling on the barrel?

I was wondering myself how a sabot slug would work out of a smoothbore barrel for HD ranges of maybe 15 yards or less. I like the idea of the Hornady slug that expands kind of like a hollowpoint, expending most/all of its energy in the bad guy

Rifled slugs don't spin. They stabilize because they're very nose heavy. The analogy most often used is that of a badminton birdie. If the grooves cut into a rifled slug serve any real function, it's to allow a sort of crush zone which allows the slug to squeeze down through a choked bore.

Sabot slugs are cool and all, but they're very expensive, and only fly properly from a rifled bore. They're meant for big game hunters in shotgun only areas to be able to stretch the range of a shotgun to the very max. A good bolt action or single shot slug gun with a good load, good scope, and a good shooter will take deer out past 200 yards.

Here's some good reading on sabot slugs... http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot46.htm

Ah I see. I have never shot a rifled slug out of a shotgun with a choke. I always thought it was bad but then again I am still learning new things every day.

I am learning too. I thought the Sabot slugs had rifling grooves on the slugs themselves for use in smooth bores??

FSDS Slugs!

Don't forget the Sauvestre fin-stabilized sabot slugs. Seem to work very well out of smoothbores.

Mine is stock with the exception of a recoil pad. I am interested in acquiring an adjustable stock with a pistol grip, and a forend light. Your pictures have given me a lot of ideas.

Old skool and new skool!

I did have the Knoxx Spec Ops stock on the 870 Express "Talo" edition but I went back to K.I.S.S. I have grown to like traditional style shotgun stocks.

A saboted slug can group just fine from a smoothbore. My SPAS 12 shoots a full magazine of my sabot (roundball/AA shotcup) loads into about 8 inches at 100 yards. It all depends on the load and the gun..

I went to Dick's yesterday fixin to spend some money I shouldn't...

They had the Benelli M2 Field rather than Tactical model, for $899 instead of $1150+ for the tactical... pass...I bought the 930 SPX instead of this so moot point IMHO. Only if I had a FREE spare $1200 would I go get the M2 Tac (maybe someday? lol )

They also had twin Supernova's but also field models...They were nice black synthetic and pistol grip but big barrels... I want the tactical model like you guys here... Even though it'd be nice AND smart to add this to my portfolio I just couldn't and didn't...

also had a camoed-up Nova...and it was HUGE... I mean, whatever you use the biggest shotguns for and longest barrels, that's what this was for...Sheesh.

So I decided to wait... and picked up a Savage Mark II BXP scoped bolt action wood .22LR instead

Here is my 870 that is finally done. It is a 1976 870 Wingmaster with a 18.5 inch barrel. I bought it recently and now have 3 barrels for it. A 30" barrel, a slug and then this HD barrel. I love the old Wingmasters!

I shouldn't have any issues with the mag extension sticking that far out should I??
