have you every built your own 1911?

Just wondering if any of yall have ever built your own 1911. I am considering it, but I don't know if I can actually do all the needs to be done on it. I hear that I will spend more on it building it rather than just going out and buying one. That is not my major concern. I think it would be a great reward to actually build a gun and it go bang everytime and accurate. I will take as much info in as yall will give me. Looking for all kinds of advice, and how hard would it be.. barrel fitting...slide to frame fitting...bla bla...thanks for the help...hope to hear from a lot of you guys ...

i'm going to be building one in the next month or so.

the Wilson DVD's will give you some insight, as well as the BlindHogg website.

I built a norinco and it took about a year and a half. I fitted all new parts and did not use any parts except the frame slide and grip bushings. I learned a lot about how each part works and how they are supposed to feel and work with each other. I am very mechanical but learned a lot. It is rewarding and frustrating and expensive. You will destroy some expensive parts along the way. You will end up with a lot of respect for dane burns and mr baer and mr wilson and don.williams. it is not a quick process. It is not for everyone.

I've always wanted to build one. Maybe if I ever get around to taking Bob Rodgers' class, then I will accomplish my goal of building one.

I have built a few of my own 1911's, 2 Caspian's, 2 Fusion kits, 1 Remsport, and a Frankencolt rebuild. I so far have opted for fitted frame and slide, only requiring lapping together. I also generally have used Kart EZ fit barrels, I don't know why it is called EZ because it really isn't. The only real big hurdle beyond that is learning how to do a good trigger job, the rest is mostly cosmetics and personal preference.

Oh and it is most certainly NOT cheaper to build it yourself.....build for personal enjoyment.

Wilson has kits with all the hard work/fitting already done, just have to do the small parts.

I'm about 80-90% finished with my first... Caspian 10mm commander.
First rounds went through it today... no issues and I still have all my fingers!

I thought 1911s are for BBQs and photo opportunities only and if you actually planned on carrying or shooting your gun, you should own a Glock.

Correct if you want to carry a gun that is dishwasher safe you should carry a Glock, otherwise carry a Sig.

It's not finished yet and I had to borrow the grips off my delta...
What do y'all think of the "chain link" I milled on the msh & front strap? ... think it needs another row on the front?

Thats great! How hard was it? Did you do it all by hand or have machining tools to work with? Im just curious because I know nothing about this yet and im dying to try it, but I dont really have anyone to help me through it around where I live so...Im afraid I will lose my mind during the process haha.
