+1....the 135 fragments nasty...just like the 357 magnum, which most believe to be the number 1 manstopper of all time.

OK, so, the other day I was able to shoot my new 165 gr Win rangers. WOW! what a blast! Literally! I was surprised at how much more push there was over the 180 gr Remington HPs, that I have been shooting. The 1st round kinda hurt! Man! Those things must be haulin' butt!

For ALL my .40's (27,23,22)... It's nothing but 180 HST's.

For range use I still like to stick with 180's, but usually it's what i can find the cheapest.

I actually went out and shot my DRT 105 grn .40 sw JHP the other day and was pleasantly surprised. 100 rounds functioned flawlessly and double taps were easy and accurate. These might be my new self defense round. I cant comment on how the fragmented or penetrated as it was in a indoor range. Hopefully someone can pick these up and do some testing on em.

Federal HST 180 gr for carry/duty ammo, anything that runs reliably for plinking, however, I find the recoil impulse is noticeably softer with 180 than with 165 and lower.

.40 S&W 180 gr Gold Dots are the issue ammunition for my former department and my son's police department.

Yea--I snagged a box of the 135 Federals at Wally World, too. Wasn't sure about the ballistics, but for the price, I couldn't pass on them.

I've since read the limited ballistic tests and "experiences". Still think that they may be a great "summer/light clothing" choice. May grab some more next stop at the "mart".

I bought some of the 135 Feds from WM, just to try. I found them snappy, especially in the G27. Also, they tend to shoot high in my GLOCKs and none have adj sights. I moved back to the 155-165 stuff and will probably stay there. They do make for great conversation when shooting water jugs though.

Its a toss up for me....

I like both of these as I am accurate with both so far.

135 Federal HST...(massive hollow point, look at the picture).. a little light but its traveling ....really moving.

165 Rangers..........accurate and easy to shoot

All of the above out my G27

They were using a dowloaded GD 165 @ 1100 as opposed to 1150. They now use the Winchester Ranger Bonded 180, same bullet as the PDX 180.

Yeah... I'm a big HST fan, but I bet the ranger would be nearly identical.

I found the 200 gr WFN-GC to be more accurate than the 180 gr FN-FMJ I was shooting and recoiled less also. The bullets cut wadcutter type holes in the targets. Even though they don't expand, similar shaped bullets make nasty holes in game animals. I don't worry about expansion. Wound diameter is determined by meplat size and impact velocity, not how big the mushroomed bullet is. Hardcast bullets with a large meplat create wounds by a different mechanism than hp ammo. I am not saying hardcast flatnosed bullets are better, just different in how they go about creating a wound. They will penetrate deeply though so you need to consider that if choosing that type of ammo. The ammo worked in both my G23 and G27. With my G27 in a pocket of my hiking shorts I have nothing to fear from either 2 legged or 4 legged varmints when hiking in CA.

There is so little (or no) practical difference in performance so test all of them and pick the one you shoot best, even if it's all just in your head.
