A2? A4? M4?

I'm about to invest in an AR rifle. I understand the 5.56 /.223 chamber differences, but while I'm looking, I'm coming across evidently several different models, A2, A4, and M4 mainly. Could somebody explain the differences in these models, and the advantages/disadvanges of each, or at least direct me to an article on this subject? Thank you.

As far as civilian purposes
A2 has a fixed carry handle with sight built in, stock is 5/8" longer than A1.
A4 has a removable carry handle and sight with a flat top rail for mounting optics.
M4 is a 16" carbine, collapsable stock, f sight base, the receiver has longer feed ramps to help reliability, also flat top rail for mounting optics.

Probably a stupid question, but I appreciate the answer.
