10mm dt 135 grain nosler

Mr. Ayoob-

I know you have been a big fan of the 135 grain nosler 40 S&W at about 1300 fps. What are your thoughts on this same bullet in the 10mm variety. Double Tap has this load at around 1600 fps. If it is devastating in the 40S&W, it seems like it would be an explosion going off at the 10mm speeds.

The 135 grain Nosler first proved itself in the Cor-Bon .40 load, 1300 foot-seconds, in the early 1990s. Some of us feared that going faster out of the 10mm it might expand and fragment too soon at accelerated velocity, but folks like Ted Nugent killed enough large game with it from a 10mm to assuage that fear.

The 1600 foot-second range you quote is faster than the Cor-Bon, and to my knowledge is unexplored territory. I would certainly expect a wide wound channel, but honestly don't know if penetration depth will be adequate.

Wishing you the best,
Mas

What is your opinion on the most effective 10mm round for self defense? Or do you think the other calibers (9mm,40, 357sig) are just as effective with todays bullet technology, like many suggest and with less recoil?

At full power, the 10mm is definitely more potent than the 9mm or .40. The trick is finding the right projectile at the right velocity. The early Norma ammo didn't expand and just shot through like ball. The FBI load essentially duplicated 180 grain subsonic .40 S&W. The 10mm Auto cartridge didn't catch on, so it wasn't represented out there in the field, and people were rarely shot with it. I personally always thought the 165 grain JHP full power 10mm in the 1300 foot-second range had huge potential, but never ran across a case of a human shot with one.

There were some shootings with the 180 grain 10mm full power at around 1200 foot-seconds produced by Pro-Load, but I don't recall the bullet they used and the excellent Pro-Load ammo is no longer available in any case. The single full power 10mm that seems to have accumulated the most shootings in the field is the 175 grain Winchester Silvertip, which has worked out very well.

best,
Mas
