Wouldn't use it for HD, but it would take most game in NA, especially at 100 yards. Recoil on the fullsize isn't bad at all. Be aware that ammo is quite a bit more expensive, and they're not as easy to customize as an AR.

I'd personally get an 18-20" AR and set it up for precision. It could fill a very different role than your 16" carbine, but would still share mags, ammo, and manual of arms.

You already have an AR15. You DON'T already have an M1A. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Although if you wanted another rifle that's more practical for you than the M1A, and much much less expensive to shoot, you could get a nice AK.

the m1a/m14 is my favorite rifle hands down. its a bit big and heavy but its accuracy and power ar comforting. i definately wouldnt use it for HD but it would be a neat toy to play with at 100 yards.

that said, with a 100 yard limit, i think the 308 will be overkill and id look at either another AR but a SPR 18-20" version, an AK, or even look into the 300 aac blackout. if you reload, the aac is a pretty neat round that gives you AK power but uses .223 brass and .308 bullets. maybe a 6.8spc or other larger caliber in the ar15 platform if you are looking to hunt.

The price is pretty good. I bought mine a couple months ago used (I jumped on it because it was all USGI except for the receiver.) The newer ones are supposedly lesser quality, but to what extent you or I would know the difference, I have no clue.

I just shot an M1A this weekend for the 1st time....my vote is for you to get the M1A absolutely.

I now want one no matter the expense of ammo. The fact that it can stop the engine of a vehicle better than my AR15 is just good old fashioned American cool. (not that I need to punch holes in engine blocks anytime soon? lol)

If the truth was known, most M1A owners shoot their safe queens at 100 yds maybe 3 or 4 times a year.

if you can get it as you say for way below current market value go for it. Most of my shooting is at my clubs 100 yard range but I have multiple 308's and 30-06's. You never know when the chane to use its extended range and power will come up either on the range or in the field

I would love to get an M1A but in 30-06 as it was made for! A 308 will take any game you want to shoot well past 100 yards! The only problem with the M1a is you can't hot rod it much cause you start breaking things! Op rod! Be careful of factory rounds-stick with Milsurp!

I have a M1A and it shoots great....don't shoot it much anymore. I'd go the AR in .308 to play with. I use to shoot my M1A as a Service Rifle but the AR took that job years ago, Mike.

1. M1A in original 30.06?

Wasn't the M-14 (7.62) designed to replace the M1 Garand (30.06)?

I've been trying to break my Springfield Armory M1A for over 2 years now.
I've dumped up to 5 20rd mags just as fast as I could pull the trigger.

Lot's of heat and smoke from oil burning off the barrel, but NO PARTS
BREAKAGE in almost 10,000rds.

I own both. I like both. In a shtf scenario I'd grab my M1A.

The .308 is a mid power round imo. Recoil is mild in an autoloader, especially one as heavy as the M1A. Accuracy of the M1a is well documented, although it will open up when the barrel gets too hot. As to game it will take up to deer, bear and elk with good shot placement. I have a low power scope on mine 2-7X variable and have no problem hitting the center rings of a B-27 out to 300Y, and my eyes are bad these days too. Winchester White Box ammo can be had for $10-12/box in bulk.

It is a little trick to play with the M1A without spending a lot of money. I have a Gen3 scope mount and a low power Nikon scope. I also put a synthetic stock on it which I like better in all weather conditions. Other then that I had a trigger job done to it by Bill Springfield which I highly recommend.

There have been a few known issues with newer rifles, but overall the whole MIM thing seems to be pretty overblown. I was ready to buy a new rifle (really wanted the scout/squad) but I couldn't turn down the deal on the used one I found. My cousin has new one and he has never had any trouble with it.
