Looking up old veterans info

I used to hunt with an old doctor that was a battalion surgeon in the pacific. Sadly he died 8-10 years ago. Lately he has popped into my head along with some of his stories. Is there an semi-easy way to find out what unit he was in, and what he did?

I was never a card player, but I would sit and BS with him and another old guy for hours while they played gin. At that time they were both 65? years older than I was. I do miss those days.
