Dipping my toe into the reloading pool.
So I am making the jump from 9mm to full-time .45acp only. I am heading to the Happiest Place on Earth on Friday, and when I get back next week I am (finally) picking up a Kobra Carry that I have been paying off for a while.
I am joining a local club for my bday in June and plan on shooting a couple of times a month. I think I am going to go with a LCT this summer, as I only plan on shooting 500 rounds a month and figure the LCT is a cost effective way to get into reloading.
Today I took the first step. Ordered a copy of the Lyman (49th ed) guide and it will be here when I get back from FL. Also want to get the ABC's as well. Been lurking in here for a little while and just wanted to say hello.

Good choices all around. LCT is great for your limited needs.

I don't know how anyone can afford to shoot if they don't reload. Even reloads are expensive, but less than half of what factory loads are.
I find reloading to be relaxing and therapuetic, except when you realize that you ran out of powder 20 something rounds ago

I am a stay at home dad with 2 small kids (5 & 3), so locking myself in the basement at night to load ammo will be beyond theraputic for me.

Going to the Bunny Ranch, huh?
There is no such thing as dipping one's toe in the reloading pool. One either does a belly flop from the from the ten-meter diving board or one sits in a deck chair and observes while real men create history.
Your choice is man or minion... choose wisely.
Oh, nice gun and good choice on the press... don't trust anyone here under 60.

Awesome, I plan on doing the exact same thing. The LCT seems to be a great kit for the price and I may go that route as well. FYI I've found some great videos on YouTube of people using it and it seems very simple.

"I feel your pain". Having raised three boys, my reloading time was always liek therapy, doing grownup things on my time, priceless. Welcome to the club, you'll never regret it.

Reloading literally saved my marriage. I'm not kidding. You have found the right place to get started. Good folk around here. Good luck and be safe.

I wish. Mrs Hokie won't let me anywhere near Vegas.
Actually I would dive headfirst into the deep end of the reloading pool, however, it wil be a few months before I have the fundage to get my press and stuff...so several months of reading and recon are like sitting on the edge with my feet in the cool water.

Do yourself a huge favor & add a real reloading manual to your collection, the Lyman #49 or SPeer #14. There are just too many holes in the Lee & a lot of vague data.

Welcome hokie
The LCT is a great start, puts out very good quality ammo and is a economical way to getting started reloading. Sounds like you got the time and your numbers of 500 a month though no doubt will increase will not be a problem with the LCT. Take a look at Kempfs for the best deal on a LCT ready to roll for one caliber. I'm also suggest starting with a FMJ bullet, either MG or PD and the "kool-aide" powder of choice WST.

A press is one of about twenty items you'll eventually have to have. I would stay away from reloading kits and just get quality equipment the first time around.
If it's therapy you're after, skip the powder throw and measure each charge by hand.

Welcome aboard!
I 2nd the recommendation for the LCT kit from Kempf! Be sure to get the classic cast Turret press and not the aluminum one!
Oh --- if you're ever here in Colorado, keep an eye on your wheel weights....

Thanks Boxer. I was going to definitely do the setup from Kempf with the upgrade. Still on the fence for a scale, tumbler, calipers, etc...
Jack was hanging out in my neck of the woods (1911 room) and we had a thread on using lead, and I was thinking about giving the Montana 230gr RN a look. Half the price of comparable FMJ from what I've seen. I plan on carrying 230gr GoldDots so I'd like to try to replicate the performance in a practice round. If that's not possible using lead, then FMJ it is.

Money spent now is less money spent later.....
Dillon or RCBS beam scale $50
Tumbler... keep an eye out at cabelas for when their kit goes on sale tumbler, media and sifter for $60 then get a clean 5 gallon bucket.
Harbor frieght for calipers regularly goes on sale for $10
Only other thing you may consider is a case gauge, though you could use your actual barrel. I prefer the former as I hate to have to strip my 1911 down just for that purpose, with a Glock no issues.
If you find you can swing the slightly extra cost the MG 200 JFP is a hot bullet great performance.

You mistake WST for TG when talking "koolaid". TG is what is pushed to newbs as a "great choice", just drink it, dont ask why. WST is the refined reloaders choice, for those willing to actually try something not pushed by a gunshop yokle or IDPA/IPSC gamers.

What makes the 45acp a great reloaders round, it's equally happy running on 230grRNL as it is 230grRNFMJ. Quite easy to get "ball" equiv vel using lead bullets.

Hokie obviously has me confused with my evil twin brother... I would never cheat on my fellow loaders by visiting another forum.
What's a 1911 anyway?

Clearly I am confused.
http://glocktalk.com/forums/showpost...56&postcount=9
You know...the 1911. It's that reallllllllllllllllllllllllllly old, outdated pistol design. The one that is really ammo sensitive, can't stand hard use, has never seen any kind of "real conflict" and compared to Tupperware....is highly unreliable. You wouldn't like them. You have to spend $2k+ to get one that kind of works.....some of the time.
