In a self defense situation, I am prepared to shoot at least three times. I hope that is enough to stop someone with my 40, 45 or 357.
I read someone talking about emptying their magazine into an assailant. That seems excessive. How many shots do you recommend? Enough to kill or incapacitate?
The situation will determine the round count. Most defensive gun uses end with no shots fired at all. If you fire once and miss, and he drops his gun and raises his empty hands, stop shooting. If he needs to be shot, keep shooting until he is clearly no longer a threat. There have been cases where the good guy has had to reload twice and keep shooting to solve the problem. If you plan on anything, plan on being flexible and adaptable.
