Anybody Use a Rocket Stove?

For outdoor cooking I have a large BBQ chef that sits unused because it takes a half bag of charcoal every time I fire it up. I have a small Japanese clay hibachi that works great and only takes about 5 briquettes to cook a full meal. But it still requires charcoal and is only a grill.

I'm looking at building or buying a Rocket stove (probably building) and was wondering if anyone used one on a regular basis? By all accounts they are SUPER efficient and use a very tiny amount of twigs or cardboard for a given heat output.

Yup. Hints:

Don't overbuild it. You want thin metal (preferrably stainless) and perlite/vermiculite insulation so that as much heat goes to the cookpot as possible. The heavy ones suck up a fair bit of heat--fine for one you plan to simmer on all day but a waste if you plan to only do short burns.

You can build them from cob if you want cheap.

The gap around your pot/pan is very important. Figure out what pan(s) you want to use and then build accordingly.

They take a lot of babysitting because you have such a small fire.

I haven't got it right (yet) but those are the mistakes I have made so far.

Looks like a good idea. Going to get that DVD.

And update.
