My dept has never had it happen but our sister town had a K9 go down after a barricaded suspect shot him on an entry. He was treated with the same honors as a human officer. Flag flown at half staff, mourning bands worn, a service at the PD, a procession to the gravesite and service at the gravesite. A local church donated a plot and donations were used to purchase a headstone. We had close to 40 handlers and their partners from hundreds of miles show up to pay their respects.
