Wingmaster Question for AIPPI or Anyone Who'd Care to Respond
Mr. McGuire:
I've gotten a lot out of your posts on here Glocktalk, so I thought I'd run a question by you to see if you had a suggestion. I've got a 1976 Wingmaster and I recently added a Mossberg-manufactured 870 18.5 inch barrel and a Wilson 2 shot mag extension. Now I notice that when I chamber a shell (Federal bulk pack from Walmart), it feels sluggish or slow on the forward or chambering part of the fore-end stroke. Could it be that the Mossberg manufactured barrel has a tight chamber, or that the Federal target load is a slightly larger shell, or could it be something else entirely? I've dry-cycled some Remington shells through since and they don't seem sluggish . Finally, it started raining pretty good while we were shooting and everything got damp, if that could be a factor. I'm sure long- distance diagnosis is kind of an educated guess but any ideas you might have would be appreciated.

I have not heard of any issues with that after market Mossberg barrel and they get the job done, however, horse whipping an 870 owner who puts an after market barrel on a Remington should be allowed. I think it is in Texas.
go to www.aiptactical.com and click on the red link "Install and cleaning". Make a polishing rod like that and follow the directions. Most extraction issues come from a fouled chamber or the ammo so this should correct the issue. Also, simply because a loaded shell extracts well does mean the same round will extract well after it is fired. These bulk rounds have a very cheap base and these can swell and cause issues in any firearm. The Federal is not know for these issues as much as the Winchester bulk packs are but if you are not having the issue with higher quality ammo then of course this points to the bulk ammo.

Well, the Mossberg was the only compatible 18.5 in barrel I could find at the time. All Remington barrels of that length were sold out or on backorder where I looked.
I looked at the chamber and bore polishing rods on your website and will give them a try.
Thanks for the advice.

You are forgiven as need takes priority over all else. The barrel you have will last the life of the weapon. If There were no 870's I would have a 590 by my bed so I am in no way anti Mossberg.

I've read there have been issues with the Mossberg 870 barrel. The issue is that the channel where the extractor enters the chamber is burred up. The fix according to what I've read is the take a flat file and clean up the burrs and this will correct the problem. I read this over at midwayusa in the reviews of this barrel. I was looking at this barrel as someone had them listed cheap in the classifieds here, but decided to go factory after reading those reviews.

Thanks for the info fourrobert, I had not heard that. I would of course not use one being a Volume Remington Parts Dealer but knowledge of all products that fit a Remington shotgun is of interest to me.

I got the materials and made the chamber polishing rod. It is a nice snug fit w/ 000 steel wool and should polish up nicely. AIPPI's website does a very good job of explaining this. I will borrow my BIL's drill and polish the chamber tomorrow and report back. I also checked the extractor channel on the barrel and it is very cleanly machined. No visible burrs seen.

JD is an excellent guy to deal with. If you email him, he'll answer your questions and do it in a timely manor. It's hard to find that kind of service. I've been working on a couple 870's I have, one for duty use, and the other for HD/duty/fun and have been ordering my parts from JD. He's hard to beat when it comes to 870 parts and accessories.

Yesterday afternoon I made a chamber polishing rod and a bore polishing rod following JD Mcguire's instructions on his website. I then polished the chambers and bores on my 870, Mossberg 590 and old Ithaca 37. Have not had a chance to shoot any since but will report, especially on the 870, when I do. Hopefully next weekend.

He's no slouch when it comes to my beloved 11-87's either. He even answers the phone when you call him. Takes the time to make sure your questions are answered and the parts you're looking at or for are correct. Great guy to deal with!
