Interesting concept, but the video seems to be a little dated, so I would guess that it did not catch on. I think that removing any manual manipulation from the opening/closing of the door would bring up a number of concerns. Any failures of the motors that drive the mechanism would probably be a costly fix and leave your car exposed until they were fixed, or could leave you trapped inside too. Although, maybe they though of this and there is a manual override, idk.

I think it's a great idea, though I'd also have concerns about reliability. I've yet to find a car over 10 years old that has electric windows and that has never had a problem with them. If the car door thing could be done manually - perhaps with some kind of counterweight? - it would be fantastic.
