Thoughts on the Taurus 1911 in 9mm
Anyone have any first hand experience with these? I've always wanted to add another 1911 to the collection in 9mm. I know generally speaking that Taurus semi auto's are garbage but I've heard their 1911's are pretty decent for the price. If I had it my way, (had the money) I would get the STI Trojan, or maybe the Springfield, but I don't really have an extra grand laying around

No. Just, no. If you can't get a 9mm Trojan, get a 9mm Spartan ($625ish), or a 9mm RIA ($400ish).

Just out of curiosity, what's your main gripes with it? Is it mainly the reputation that Taurus has?

I'd get a Rock Island 9mm before a Taurus.

Thanks for the feed back so far. I don't know much about RIA firearms as I don't think there is a local dealer in my area.

For the money, RIA is really hard to beat. Great guns. Buy with confidence.

I've also really considered the STI Spartan. I'm sure the Spartan is much better quality then the RIA's right?

You bet it is. Made by Arsmacor but put together in Texas. Shooters connection has them in stock for 628.00. Don't care for the target sights but it's good gun for the money.

If I find one of these Taurus 9mm for a good price, I'm gonna pick it up. That being said, I will switch out nearly all the internals. The RIAs I've seen around here were just too sloppy for me.

Really? That's first I've heard of that. Is there just a little play, or is it pretty bad?

BTW: Bud's is great to deal with, I had a good experience with them, so you can buy from them with confidence. I didn't really like purchasing a firearm I couldn't see first hand, but they note that if there is anything wrong, don't sign for it and send it back. I didn't have any issues though.

I say no to Taurus also from reading on multiple forums online the guns are not even built to 1911 specs. Read where lots of Gunsmiths have to mod the frame or other things in a Taurus 1911 to get things to fit properly. Something else that's a huge turn off is the fact Taurus 1911s cant even use 1911 style grips. They have to use some special cut of grip.
I never shot a Taurus but I never own one either because the general consensus online in multiple forums is they are horrible guns.

Thanks again for the feed back everyone. I guess after seeing everyone's opinions I'll stay away from the Taurus. I think now my front runner will be the Spartan, or I might keep trying to save and maybe find a used Trojan.

I don't know your exact budget but keep in mind Armscor Makes the RIA 1911 and the STI 1911. My understanding is that STI gets unfinished pistols and does the fine part work on them and fitting and finish. So if you have a tighter budget the RIA is still a extremely good deal and quality pistol.

Haven't seen one here locally that had a decent barrel fit/lockup. In contrast the Taurus I've seen were pretty tight, as much as I hate to say it.
