Do you attend a house of worship?
I attend church on Sundays. I finally understood the full meaning of the Gospel when I was 40 years old and became a Christian. As such, my wife and I have been attending church ever since then, 15 years for me. Having like minded people being a part of my/our life has become very important to us. When our sons girlfriend was killed in an accident, my father died in 2004, my sister was diagnosed with a super rare brain disease that she died from in 2009, my remaining sister was diagnosed with a super rare lung disease that may kill her AND my mother died last December, our church family and friends surrounded us and helped us almost as much as our faith did. Therefore, I firmly believe that corporate worship strengthens us and allows us an avenue to serve others.
So..... Do you attend a house of worship? Just curious what the response will be. Also, how civil this will be!

I keep the Sabbath, we usually meet in each others houses. We do travel during Holy Days and attend larger groups.
As the bible says where 2 or more are gathered in my name I am among them.
Church isn't a building, the greek word for church means "called out ones"
So if a couple of like minded believers can get together and study the word of God. That is church.

Yes, I attend both to give and to recieve. The Lord expects us to put our shoulder to the wheel and help out where we can. There are certainly a lot of people in this world who are hurting.
I got run over by a car a couple of decades ago and the hospital staff was asking what church I went to because so many people came to see me.

Once every couple years I get talked into going by family members that do not know I'm atheist. It's depressing because I sit there the whole time wondering if all the people there are crazy, or I am.

Yes, corporate and private worship are key ingredients to keeping the relationship alive. For us, corporate worship is a two hour turn around. One to get there, one to get back. But, it is the best environment for the kids. There are a plethora of churches to choose from locally. However, what I look for in a church is a good structure for the children and that it is truth seeking, not simply a social event. To that end, as I am sure many of you remember my first major post here, I keep Saturday, the Sabbath.

No offense, I don't knock anyone for finding religion, but I don't buy organized religion. I choose to live a good life, be good to people, do the right thing and take no part in anything related to a bible. Everyone has their own right to their own religion, or not. The river gods are where I thank mother nature, not an imaginary diety that watches everything I do.

I feel uncomfortable in churches. It's a feeling similar to the one you have when you see a cat drinking from the toilet.

I hear people who don't want any part of "organized religion" and I get that, but I don't understand your objection to "anything related to a bible". The Bible does contain information that encourages one to live a good life, be good to people and to do the right thing, so it sounds kind of like you actually are taking part of things related to a Bible. Also, if the deity you refer to is imaginary, are not the river gods and mother nature equally imaginary? It appears to me that you are practicing that which you wish to avoid. As for me, the "organized" part of my faith is the church worship time. Outside of that, what I do is more of a "relationship" with my Creatlor than a "religion". I feel like it is more important for me to keep my eye on Him than to be concerned that He is watching me.
Thanks for your input and I really am curious as to your comments, not trying to start anything. Peace!

You prefer disorganized religion? What other important area of life would you prefer disorganization to organization?

I don't know that you could call it a house of worship, but I sometimes attend services at a Unitarian church where atheists are welcome. I enjoy the real-world focus.

There is no creator other than your parents. The river gods I thank are imaginary good luck charms, much like organized religion's gods, without the paperwork. Just my belief.

I sure do. It's called the Pecos Wilderness. Very similar to GreenDrake's church.

Cool! I understand a little about the Unitarian movement but I do want to point out that atheists are also welcome in our church, but due to the Bible teaching, Christ centered focus, I imagine they would be bored. Thanks for your reply!

Have you been made to feel unwelcome at some other church? I go to a Southern Baptist church and I guarantee you that you'd feel welcome.

And for you pious types, who speak of "his specific plan of salvation through Jesus Christ," go float your own ******* boat.
There are a million different ways to worship God other than your own. We realize that you don't believe that, and that your own, single, perfect way is THE ONLY WAY. So, just go away and leave us alone. You, and only you, will be saved.
|
jtull7, love your name! I sat through an awesome Jethro Tull concert on the Clemson University campus in Little John Coliseum MANY years ago. What an awesome concert! Now, about your attitude....
Where did THAT come from?? It is no surprise, secret or "gotcha" that Christians share a fundamental belief. We believe that Jesus is real, that He was born of a virgin, that He walked the earth during his life and ministry, He was crucified and died on a cross on the hill named "Golgotha", He was buried and was resurrected 3 days later. We believe that He is the Son of God and that if anyone believes that in their heart and confesses it with their mouth, that person or those persons will have an eternal life in Heaven. It is a gift, not a burden. It is amazing, not confining. If I believe this is true, really believe it is true, then why would you be so pissed off if I tell someone about it?!? And, why wouldn't I staunchly defend it? And why are you so "go away and leave us alone" upset? You and WHO?
Here's the deal: I asked if folks attend a house of worship. You indicated that you do and then you blast Christians for THEIR belief. Are you upset with only Christians, or do Muslims, Jews, Catholics and others piss you off, too? Is it only the "plan of salvation" crowd or is it anyone who purports to have "the" answer about how to enter Heaven? Why did you choose this thread to tell Christians to **** off? Dude, what did we or Jesus do to you?!?
OK, the end. I imagine this will guarantee a lock. Sorry if it does because I've enjoyed all of the responses. Yep, all of them. Peace!
