Best .22 round for self defense
Found this contest for a 10/22
http://www.firearmstalk.com/forums/f...contest-45126/
Assuming I win , what would be the best .22 round for it? Granted It's just a .22 but i still wouldn't want to be shot by it. Out in the boondocks so neighbor penetration isn't a problem.

40gr round nose. To ensure adequate penetration, particularly from pistols, and to ensure reliable feeding.
I also adviocate FMJ in .25 and .32 for the same reasons.

Best .22 LR round out there, in my opinion. Hyper-velocity and superior accuracy.

Although i don't believe .22lr is a good self defense round in general, the stinger is probably the worst round out of all the .22 loading available.
IMO, penetration is the name of the game here. I want a heavy bullet(as far as 22lr is concerned anyway) with a round nose to get as much penetration as possible when using such an anemic caliber.
A very light, hollow point bullet is exactly what I would stay away from, and that's exactly what the Stinger is. The only thing it has going for it is velocity...even then, the velocitor is only 8ftlb less energy at the muzzle and will have much better penetration and terminal ballistics than the stinger round.

Your question is a lot like asking, "What pocket knife if best for fencing?"

I'd use the highest energy 40gr or 36gr solid like the CCI Mini Mag. It's generally more reliable (less duds) and gets good velocity and penetration.

In a revolver , CCI SGB if you can find it.
In a Semi like the 10/22 and High Velocity Solid of 40gr.

Then some steel guns.
Its the size of a Commander, got the capacity of a HiPower and can shoot 180gr bullets. G23 old school recipe for success.

CCI Stingers hands down in my opinon. Given its a 22 caliber round but I have shot grape fruit with stingers before and they explode. I know it would not have the same affect on a person. I still think at worse it hurt like hell and at best cause major internal injury's.

It doesn't really matter what brand or grain you purchase just get a bulk pack of ammo(500) and throw it at your attacker, repeat until they flee or are crushed by the bulk of ammo you send their way.
Seriously I do not recommend a .22 for any kind of self defense at all ever. If you can get a .22 you can get something bigger .38 .410 shotgun etc. If you win a gun and want self defense trade it in.

I would use 40gr CRN CCI Mini Mags for self defense. Against animals up to about 3 pounds.

Ted knows.
I would also add .380 ACP to the list, however.

Arguing about which .22 lr round is best for self defense is like two army privates arguing who has more rank
Technically one might rank higher then the other, but in the grand scheme of things there really isn't any difference.
If using a .22 lr for self defense the most important thing is reliability, pick a round that will go bang every time. The most reliable .22lr ammo I have ever used is ely.

CCI premium .22lr is my favorite.
I like Velocitor best, with the Mini Mag and Stinger tied for second. Actually, all of them are excellent rounds. If I had to rely on .22lr for self-defense I'd load a premium CCI round in the magazines.

My favorite .22lr!!!!, with CCI Minimags being a close 2nd. The Stingers have a distinct crack instead of the pop from standard velocity rounds. I like it, lol~

I understand your reasoning, so it's kinda like the loudest .22lr round may be best...(for scare tactic).....
