I would take the Para GI Expert off that list right off the bat. I had one and long story short had to send it back and Para customer service was the worst.

As far as prices, my GI was $500 over a year ago the Ruger around $600 and the R1 about $575.

I really like the Ruger even though its on a cast frame, which still isn't a deal breaker for me. I like thats its USA made and has Novak sights

I have seen a few R1s; I like that the mainsrping housing is metal and not plastic and the large sights, but fit and finish seems to be hit or miss.

You may also want to look at Springfield Mil Specs, I just got one in parkerized for $575 and am very happy with it so far.

Only one? I recently acquired my first 1911, and now I want MORE! Unfortunately my wallet won't cooperate...yet.

Good luck in your quest, and welcome to the site.

Your going to end up getting a Colt some day, so why not today? Springfield would be a good second choice. For your first 1911s.

I don't know, if the Colt is in nice condition it sounds like a decent buy.

I'd go with the Colt if its in good shape. They are excellent guns, IMO. They night not be the tightest, have the most bells and whistles, but they are sold, quality, American made 1911's that will still out shoot all but the best shooters.

$600 is a fair price, but you might as well see if he'll bight for $575.

That is a Decent price for the Colt, but personally I would throw a about $50.00 more on top and get the Ruger NEW.

I would assume you could shoot the Colt?
I would pick the Colt, I would suggest staying away from Para & Taurus.

1911

The thing about the Colt is you can get your money back if you ever need to. The next best option might be the Ruger. Since it does not have the series 80 trigger it might stay in demand for the better trigger pull in a very economical 1911.

I personally would stay away from the Colt, I'm not keen to the firing pin block safety

I took the colt out monday and put a few rounds through it. What a nice shooting gun. Fits my hand like a glove. Accuracy was very good. I like the fact that it is made in the USA. I know I will want another 1911 after I get my first. Still of the fence on what to do but the colt looks good.

Desert eagle
Metro Arms
STI Spartan
RIA
ATI
All of these guns are at or below the price range you quoted. The DE and the STI are great guns for less than 700. The others can be depending on model for less than 500. Some less than 400.
I love Colt By the way. That would be my choise if the gun is in good condition.

Since the Colt is in good condition and you seem to like it, I would say that should be your choice. You cannot go wrong with a Colt. Down the road, when you get a little seasoned on the 1911, you can start shopping for your next one. The options available to you are many and the pricing varied. It will not be an easy decision. Ask Fedor.

Go with the Ruger, STI Spartan, or Desert Eagle.

You will be happy with the Colt.
You will also be buying another eventually.
It cannot be avoided so just accept it.
