10mm ?
I am looking at a 10mm and I have a 36 and several 1911's. I am just curious about this 10mm round and it's advantages or disadvantages besides being a harder ammo to find? I am working my way into reloading so not too worried about ammo. I'm just looking for some information on this round.

Yeah I am too. I cant decide what to get...a 29 or a 20...sf? compensated?
I was out scouting for deer last week and heard a big critter making noise in the thick stuff. Had to sneak up on it to see what it was and I felt kinda undergunned with the G32....Turned out to be only a fox playing with a doomed rabbit....Anyways....Someone help me pick a 10....

I have a G20 because I wanted a woods gun and wasn't concerned with the large size of it since it wasn't ever intended to be my CC gun. The nice thing about the 10MM Glocks is that they are the most versatile guns in the bunch. You can convert between more different calibers than any other Glock can, and the conversions only require a barrel swap. Even without converting it, the variety of different loads available for 10MM is wider than for most other calibers too. 155 & 165 grain projectiles have high velocity and are great against bad people, while the 200 or 220 grain hard cast loads have exceptionally deep penetration for large animals - enough to go through two average people and still kill a third - which is why I don't use them for SD on the street.
In addition to the stock barrel I've got the 6" Glock hunting barrel, two different 9x25 Dillon barrels (I wanted to compare a Bar Sto to a Lone Wolf) and a .40 barrel with threads for a suppressor, since most 10MM loads are supersonic can't be silenced very well. All the conversion calibers feed perfectly using the stock mags since the case dimensions at the rear are exactly the same for all of them. That is what allows you to avoid the potential problems with extractors and breech face width, which can happen sometimes when converting a .40 caliber to a 9MM Luger, for example. There's also .357 Sig barrels available, and I'm sure they would feed well too because .357 Sig is another one that was based on the same rear-end case dimensions.
The G29 has strong arguments in it's favor because it's just as convertable to other calibers as the G20 is, and there are longer barrels than the stock one available for it too. With a longer barrel and a grip extension slid over a stock G20 Mag, the G29 essentially becomes a G20 (with a slightly shorter slide) when you want it to, while still offering you the option to use it in stock form as a CC gun.
It can be a hard decision. Even though I have a G20 there's still a chance that I might buy a G29 someday.

IMHO, the 10mm is Highly Overrated. I have owned a 20SF and a 29SF, both were traded for something better.

Recoil on 10mm is not as bad as you would think if you have an upgraded recoil spring even if its just a few extra pounds. 20 or 29 that all depends on what you like just like a 22 vs a 27. I'm happy with my 20 but I think about a 29 sometimes

I have a G20SF and like it. Use it as a carry gun. Even with loads that are quite abit more powerful than 40 S&W the recoil seems less than my G22. Big gun and lots of fun.

Pretty good 10mm Auto lore and information:

As a 40+ year handloader, the 10mm is a dream cartridge.

I love this part!
While I am probably "preaching to the choir" here, I personally feel that the 10mm Auto is one of the most under appreciated of the modern cartridges. There are many good cartridges out there, but they tend to be good in very limited circumstances. I think the .40 S&W and the .357 Sig (both 10mm offshoots) are great defensive rounds, but I wouldn't use them for much else. The 10mm, on the other hand, is incredibly versatile. In the arena of self defense the 10mm Auto beats the .357 Magnum (the premier defensive cartridge) in bullet diameter, bullet weight, velocity and energy, plus it's designed for an auto loader. The 10mm can also fill the role of hunting cartridge (I carry a S&W 610 as a back-up when hunting), though the handgun hunter must be sure to match the round to the game being pursued (I love the 10mm, but I'm not going after Brown Bear with one!). Or the 10mm can be pressed into double duty as a back-country gun where one may be forced to defend himself (or herself as the case may be) against either four or two-legged predators. As I've stated before, if I were in law enforcement and located in a rural area I would think the 10mm Auto loaded with 180gn JHP's, say in say a Glock 20 or a S&W 1006, would be the perfect cartridge. Simply put, the 10mm Auto can do more, and in each role it has the ability to do better than most others!
Something better? Again

My 20 is my hiking gun....carry DT Beartooth in the primary magazine, and some good DT HPs in my other two mags. I don't really worry about being attacked by animals, just the two legged kind. Dopers are the ones you have to watch out for.

Good post. You'll end up with a G29 someday. I have both and love them both.

I have a friend that has a neighbor that wants to sell me his 10mm. It’s a 20 gen 3. What do you guys think would be a fair price? Great condition with maybe only 600 rounds through it.

Fair price 450-500! New one will run you just shy of $600, but a good deal would be around $425. If he asks you for an offer, start at $400, and go up to $500. The 600 rounds is nothing, barely broke in!
