Let's talk alittle about Mavericks

I saw a brand spanking new one in a shop today with a ventrib barrel (28")

Now, I am familiar with the love for these, and have shot the security versions a couple of times. Damm fine gun period. And of course, the best of both worlds between an 870 and a 500 control-wise.

However, I have been looking for an on-the-cheap trap gun lately. Best deal was 400+ Remington 11-87. But the Mav was only 250.

Honestly, as much s a semi will reduce recoil, I'd much rather have a very reliable pump for double duty on HD/SHTF.

What is there in the line of a shorty barrel for the Maverick? Can I get a cyclinder 18.5" for HD use? If so where/how much? While pump is not "cool" for trap and skeet, 250 is cool period! Only allowed to load one round on the line anyway...

comments, thoughts, suggestions?

I believe they sell mavericks with the 18.5'' barrels IIRC...

This is a little old Circa 2008 but if you call mossberg with the part # they probably havent changed

http://www.maverickarms.com/pages/barrels.htm

BTW I think the 88 and the 500 share barrels

Well, that explains why i couldn't find them on the Mossberg sight...

500 shares parts eh? Can't be 100%. But barrel would be a high likely.

The Maverick and 500 barrels are the same. You might also look into the Mossberg 500 combo shotguns.

I have done a little more internet sleuthing, and agree that $250 is a touch steep for the 88 Field.

I also agree that i would much prefer the 535 Turkey/field combo. I also agree it is probably twice as much.

I'd really like a cheap semi, like a Remington 11-87. But until I get an awesome client $$$ is tight!

They are fine guns, shop around you can probably get the shotgun and the barrel for that price if you check out your local used market

I was just recently browsing in the shotgun section at a local shop I prefer. I did notice a used Mav in a pistol grip only 18.5" configuration, and next to it a 500A setup similar. They were used but the Mav was $179 vs the 500A which was $199.

I walked out the door with the 500A for $150 so I can't complain.

I've heard parts can swap between the two but I don't know to what extent.

Almost all parts enterchange between the Maverick 88 and the Mossberg 500. The safety is different, obviously, and the foreend attachment is different. Other than that, they are pretty much the same gun. The Maverick comes with fewer options and hence the price difference. It's a budget 500, somewhat like the Express is the budget 870. The 88 and the 500 are both built at the same assembly plant in Eagle Pass, TX. Both use some parts shipped in from North Haven, CT. and both use some parts fabricated in Torreon, Mexico from steel shipped down there from the U.S. These parts come together in Texas, are QC'ed there, and built into guns. All Mossberg guns, the exceptions being their imported models, have final assembly done in Eagle Pass. All warranty work and parts inventory is located there also.

I've always used regular Mossbergs. But the wife is really digging trap shooting. As much as I'd like a 11-87 or 1100 or such, not finacially happening at the moment. Also, I'd love a backup for my 500. A Mav with a 18.5 would fit the bill perfectly.

The field barrel would be just fine in 28" vent for clays. < 200 you say....it may not be sexy, but dammm it would work all kinds of ways!

And let's be honest - it has better controls overall than EITHER a 500 or 870!

Every Mav I ever shot kicked like an angry mule. I don't understand it unless its the lighter plastics used in the stocks but the one my friend has is punishing.

Well, this one would be using low recoil #8 for clays. Not worried about a little bump.

Before I moved from Texas to California in 1994 I bought a brand new pistol grip Maverick 88 with 18.5" barrel for $185, not wishing to be caught in a 15-day waiting period just in case another Rodney King-type riot broke out.

The pistol grip is so punishing that the shotgun sat on the closet shelf until early 2010 when I bought a Knoxx Reduced Recoil adjustable stock for $100. What an amazing difference the Knoxx stock makes! I can shoot buckshot all day long if I wanted and for what a shotgun brings to overall home/self-defense I don't know of a better or more cost-effective alternative.

I'm reminded of purchasing a Mossy 500 18" slug barrel back in 1980 or 1981 for $25.

Aceman - it sounds like your primary use will be shooting trap. Accordingly, I would select the option best suited (but not totally limited) to that and buy the 11-87. I shoot clays much better with an auto, especially as the round count for a session grows. I've shot a lot of clays with my M500, but my 1100 was much, much more enjoyable to shoot and helped me improve my scores significantly.

For what barrels cost, I'd just try to pick up a used quality pump on the cheap. Last year I bought another M500 with three barrels, a scope, base and rings and several chokes. The gun still had the factory preservative stuff in the receiver and had been fired only a few times. I sold the turkey choke, scope and base and now have a net of $150 invested in a shotgun and three barrels.

Yeah - this is probably the right thing to do. Just can't help like the a) the cost and b) the ease of going security barrel!

I really want a 535 Field/Turkey combo anyway. I'll be just fine with the pump, my wife, however, would appreciate the semi.

Certainly do. I've got an 18.5" maverick 88.

and I've swapped barrels with my 28" 500ab barrel.(I called mossberg and they confirmed they are fine to share.)

Dang. got mine used from a friend, but that is so cheap! A lot of bang for the bucks! Almost cheap enough to just go buy another for the heck of it!

I bought a Mav 88 with the 28" barrel. Bought a 18.5 barrel for a 500 from Academy Sports for $69 and have both a hunting gun and a HD.

They share the same barrel.

This is true.A cheap and simple solution is to install a Limbsaver recoil pad.Direct fit and no more raised blood to the skin surface.tom.

I've shot a couple of 88 Securities before. Awesome gun. That's why I'm asking about the m for a field barrel.

But again - I have to consider that my wife will be shooting it for trap sessions. Say 50-100 low recoil rounds per session. Limbsaver is a great idea. Cheap too (<$30?).

Still, semi is softer yet, and better for skeet, five stand, etc...The 11-87 IS the right thing to do. And pretty dang cheap. Still...69 for a short barrel from Academy, toss a shell cuff and a mag light on there....BAM - HD #2.
