15 shot, 7 dead this weekend in Detroit.

http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/28857989/detail.html

Quote:
DETROIT -- Detroit police Chief Ralph Godbee says he expects more officers to be on the streets after a 24-hour period that was packed with gun violence and left six people dead and nine wounded around the city.
Godbee told Local 4 News Morning in a telephone interview Monday that changes could double the number of officers on the streets during the typically busy period of the day for police between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Godbee says staffing details are being worked out with union officials.
So DPD is looking to change the manpower mix.

In addition there was a fake police home invasion where "thousands of dollars" were stolen. I'm suprised that one was reported to the police.

Anyway, stay safe DPD.

The DPD police chief also reported that all these incidents would not have been affected by higher police presence. It's just another polictical move to make the people in Detoilet feel safe.... Putting a limited resource on 12 hours shifts is not the answer. How about hiring more police officers, training and equipping them correctly?

Yeah... like that's going to happen. The city will have to wait until former mayor and ex-convict Kwame Kilpatrick's book starts selling so he can pay the city back the $800,000+ he stole.

Those shot range in age from 14 to 46. Nine are younger than 21. In one case, five victims - ages 16 to 19 - were shot during a backyard welcome home party on the 200 block of West Greendale in northeast Detroit for a person recently released from being incarcerated in connection with an assault with intent to murder crime, police said. During the celebration, shots were fired. Can you say gang shooting payback? It was nice of them to all gather in the same backyard. Must have been like shooting fish in a barrel....

In another shooting, a 14-year old boy was fatally shot at about 6 p.m. in the 4600 block of Coplin Saturday when a gun went off while an 18-year old man was playing with it. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes... ( link to Detroit Free Press story)
Suddenly we have 18 year old men according to the Free Press.... how convenient for the Brady bunch to boost their gun violence numbers.

Did any of the victims not have it coming?

The ones referenced by HH seem to have been... ah... co-conspirators in their own demise.

Probably the 14 y.o. that appears to be the victim of a negligent discharge. Read it again. the 14 y.o. was not "playing stupid games." That was the 18 y.o.

Actually, that doesn't help the Brady Campaign. Their M.O. is to play off 18, 19, and 20 year olds as "youths" so they can inflate the numbers of "kids killed by guns."

With incidents like this you might be correct..... I"m surprised that "officials" haven't chalked this up to "isolated" incidents / anomalies...Unistat is correct. They'll play the manpower shell game and call it a day.....

In the state of Michigan, it's illegal to purchase a handgun if you are under the age of 21.

[Personal Opinion ON]
If you hang out with stupid people that want to show you their new "gat" and are on the business end when said stupid person decides to pull the trigger, IMHO that's considered "playing stupid games"....

If you are 14 and decide to hang with the gang boyz, then you have made one of those life changing (or in this case, life ending) decisions.

If you don't want to get shot, don't hang around the bangers.

[Personal Opinion OFF]

But you can OWN one at 18. Regardless, it is not at issue if the 18 y.o. had the gun legally or not, at least not to the dead 14 y.o.

We do not at all know that this was the case. For example, bullets go through walls, younger brothers do not get to choose if their older brothers are in gangs, and fatal ND's do happen even to legal upstanding gun owners.

Most of all, we don't expect a 14 y.o. to exhibit good judgement and maturity, so when he makes certain bad choices, we don't hold them to the same account as adults. Placing blame on the 14 y.o. in this situation is wrong.

WE are all soley responsible for where our bullets end up once they come out of our gun. I cannot say to a jury "Well, that innocent guy across the street should have ducked and dodged when I was shooting at this home invader."

There's more to it than adding cops. Adding resources will probably result in solving more crimes, but you're not going to be preventing much crime like these. You have people squatting in vacant houses running gambling operations. You probably have no idea how many vacant homes there are, no way you can get enough manpower to stumble onto enough of them containing gambling operations by chance, never going to have enough manpower to patrol the neighborhoods enough to put a dent in those. Ditto for the drug houses.

As long as you have that, you have disputes that end in gunfire. The only way to keep those things under control is neighbors to call and complain to get some attention, got to be targeted response, not random. And as long as people don't feel its safe to do that, it ain't gonna happen.

For all the murders going on in Detroit, if you eliminate thugs and drug dealers taking each other out from the murder stats, there's not all that much killing going on in comparison.

Totally agree. My daughter works at Detroit Receiving in the ER. Last night they had 4 gun shot wound (GSW) patients in the first 6 hours of her 12 hour shift. There is a guy in her module that has been shot four times, two of those to the upper torso. He has 2 chest tubes and has received 6 units of blood but his heart rate and blood pressure were still through the roof.

Victim's brother arrives and sees what has happened. Brother leaves. Within 45 minutes, 3 more GSW patients arrive who are all are from the same area of the city as the original victim and his brother.

It's all about street cred' and payback but I'm not saying anything that every DPD cop doesn't already know.

Of the things I'm thankful for are the metal detectors at every door of Detroit Receiving and the DPD officers stationed in the ER.

I've got family that works there, too, bet they know each other...

I'll have to ask if he was on that night. It's a tough problem, I don't know what to do. You can solve more crimes with more police. You can prevent a random act of violence here and there when they happen to stumble onto something while on patrol. What you can't stop is a group of people determined to shoot each other over nothing. No amount of blanketing the city with extra patrols is going to stop that.
