I would keep my Desert Eagle in .357 mag, my 240 bravo and probably a silenced selective fire M-4 or AK-47
Yes I do own these weapons. In COD 4.

Question: Most people seem to be listing two long guns, specifically a rifle and a shotgun.
How would you determine which one to have in your hands/use? I guess you are thinking about this from an 'inside or around your home' approach as you won't be walking with two long guns and you can't (personally...) use a long gun effectively while driving...so I don't really get it. How would it work?

I'll play:
1. Sako M75 .300 Winchester Magnum for harvesting heavy games and long distance blasting.
2. FN FAL for everything else
3. Ruger Blackhawk Convertible .45ACP/.45LC - I can find either ACP or Long Colt practically anywhere and everywhere.

Not necessarily an RRA AR15, but a good one for sure and a full size rifle. Not an M4 clone carbine. I don't anticipate doing any entries and I like that extra 4 inches of barrel.
Nothing is more personal than a good 870 Remington 12 gauge.

Fair enough but I love my AR

Wow, I'm so late but...
G17 (Preferably my 17L but any of the 17's will do)
M4 (Colt M4 the real thing)
870 (Police Magnum)
All three are readily available.

If truly a NOLA "Katrina" situation, then you'd be better off with three identical concealable pistols.
Cause if the National Guard or restrictive out-of-State Highway Patrol sees them, they'll confiscate them.
Therefore, no show, and plan on loosing two and still be capable of using your primary ammo stash.
And don't forget the night vision. Looters love the darkness and there is no electricity.

I would not carry 3 guns around, SHTF or not. Only one, most versatile would do.

A good option is to buy three rifles. Pass two rifles out to your buddies and you got a force multiplier.

Not necessarily what I would carry walking or driving around, but a shotgun doesn't take up much room on the side of my pack or the back of my truck. Situation dependent the extra weight and weapons would likely be unreasonable as you said. I carry around an M4 and Pistol with plenty of other weight, but if I am on the move the shotgun would be the first thing to leave behind due to the lack of range and size/weight of ammo. No real specific situation was mentioned so a general answer was called for imho.
Pistol while driving rifle otherwise would be the obvious answer to that last question. If we are talking what three guns while driving in a vehicle; G26, G34, M&P15T.

You specified a 'Katrina" type situation, so that means an urban/suburban environment and a short duration (weeks to maybe a couple months....but not years). You change the location (rural or wilderness) and/or the duration (months to years, instead of just weeks), and the list of firearms and the calibers would naturally change as well:
M4
G26 or 27 (could live with a 19 or 23)
M&P340 in my pocket (always with me anyway, no mater when or where!)
Notice that I put a high priority on lightweight mobility and firepower for the rifle (thus the M4), and concealability for the handguns. There will be times when you will want the deterent effect of being very visibly armed (like facing a mob), and others when you want to be concealed and look unthreatening (like when dealing with the National Guard). If you are just defending your home almost anything will do, but what happens when you home is destroyed (burned out by pissed-off looters)? You need light weapons that are highly mobile, just in case you can't stay home.
Shotguns are superb weapons within their practical range, but in this case the gun itself and the ammunition are just to heavy when you have to be mobile. I am a .40 fan, but in a SHTF case a 9 mm might make more sense because you can carry more rounds for the weight, and the handguns have a larger capacity. Add in the .38/.357 of the M&P340, and the possibility of finding some compatible ammo increases.
