I was going to start looking into what scope to get for my AR as I was wanting to do more longer range shooting with it. I am preparing to do some coyote control around my area.

I am not shooting competition 3 gun matches or looking for a duty carry sight, but something that would hold a good zero (good mount) and be good for 300 yards or so.

Also I need to look into a bipod, any suggestions are welcomed.

Sorry I haven't searched around, I haven't had time.

Budget on the optic and mount? you looking for something in the 1-4 range or 3-9?




for bipod Harris. Yes they are a tad on the expensive side but haven't found anything cheaper that does not fall apart.

Take a look at the Nikon 2-7X Variable. They list it as a shotgun scope but I've mounted on both an AR and an M1a at various times. Pair of Burris Tactical rings and you have a nice system.

Nikon glass is clear and this scope shoots well in dawn and dusk conditions. It's a bargain imo . At the 2X range it is easy to acquire. At 7X from a rest it is more then capable of Minute of coyote shots at 150-200Y.

My budget would be $1500 maximum, if a scope cannot be had for that price I might have to bump it up, but I would think I could find something in that range.

I'll look into the Nikon 2-7x variable.

Are there any threads with a similar question asked that anyone is aware of, I'll read through threads if someone knows of them.

Way under $1500. The scope should run you $125-145. The rings are maybe $40/pair.

Yea that is a lot nicer of a price range in the earlier post I was thinking 1-3 thousand, not hundred..whoops

Looks like a good deal after some reading up on it. Now I need recommendations on a bipod

I've read Harris is the way to go but I wasn't sure what model and what extension I would probably need, I won't be bench shooting this much, probably predator hunting and prone firing.

6"-9" S series with notched legs. The notched legs make them much faster to deploy in a hunting situation. Some opt for the 9-13 but with an AR I think that is just too high. When prone I use mine about middle point of adjustment on a 6-9.

I'm not sure exactly but does that mount work on a rail? The Harris bipod is the way to go.

advantage of a QD system is you can quickly take it off/on and use it on multiple rifles if you want. If you don't need that capability save your money.


As for the pod-loc I listed earlier it allows you to loosen the bipod so it can swivel side to side to allow for it to rest on uneven ground then be locked into place quickly. The Harris comes with a knob that allows you to do the same thing but it is harder to get ahold of, more difficult to use and not nearly as fast.

Not in my experience if using a quality bi-pod and you load it properly. Especially the case with 5.56. Now with 300WM and up that is more of a factor.

OP also said he needed it for hunting and hard to take bags with you in the field. Shooting sticks or something else might be a good option but he said he was going to be prone.

For 1500 you can get a much better scope than the Nikon. Look into a Trijicon TR24 1-4 or a Meopta 1-4. Both will do a good job for you and come in under 1k. If daylight visible illumination is not an issue for you then look hard at the Nightforce 1-4 or 2.5-10

I've shot off an assault pack or bag all over the place, tends to be more usable in my experience. I don't 'mind' bipods and will use them, primarily on beltfeds, but i'm generally a bag user.

I have a ADM mount for the bipod and it is a wonderful set up. Quick on and off.

I have a Nikon Tactical 2.5x10 IR on my rifle. It is a superb setup.

+1 When I hit the woods/fields I have a backpack with poncho's, water, snacks, first aid kit, and other useful items for two boys to be comfortable. I empty out what I need and then can use the pack to shoot off of. Works great for me, YMMV,

Get a quality mount...BOBRO is my preference but there are a few others like LaRue etc...

A decent scope for the money and some people will laugh at me but SWFA will do just fine for your needs.Here's a fixed 10x42 that will suit you or there are variables they make also.I have a old 10x42 with side focus that shoots just as good as my $4K scopes I use sometimes on my POF .308 with a BOBRO MOUNT.
