Marlin Model 30 problem

I just bought a used Marlin Model 30 in great condition. This is my first lever action and I have a problem. I'm having a hard time feeding the rounds in. They hang up on the rim of the cartridge. I suspect it's my inexperience with the lever action rather than the rifle. What am I doing wrong. It's a 30-30 and I'm using Hornady Leverevolution.
Among other evils which being unarmed brings you, it causes you to be despised
