I've been thinking hard lately about buying one kinda go to in case of emergency pistol. I've pretty much narrowed it down to Gen 4 21, HK Tac or 9SD and Sig. Possibly just keeping my G17 or Beretta 92 and getting a new barrel or a threaded barrel.

So first question, I've seen before that 9mm is easier to suppress than .45acp, which I understand but is it enough difference to give up the beauty of the .45round? And what about the .40S&W? How's that go with a supressor?

Another one is sights for use with a supressor. The kind I've seen suggested look almost like they're bolted ontop of existing sights. I mean I might be wrong but that's what it looked like. There has to be a better option.

Finally, if I go with glock, is anything else necessary to do to them to make it work well?

look into the Silencerco Osprey's. With the Osprey 45 you can shoot 9mm, 40 and 45 through it with a quick piston swap. Whereas the 9mm version you can only shoot 9mm. You won't need to go with higher sights as the Osprey hangs low so the top of the can you'll "see through" it with regular sights.

a stock Glock should operate without any malfunctions with a suppressor

.45acp out of an HK USP Tactical is louder than I would like. Id opt for the 9mm. jjslice has a good idea there.

.40sw should be as good or better than .45. Though you would have to use heavy bullets, just like with 9mm.

Might want to pick up a .22 can as well. Cheaper than 9mm and quieter too.

never heard of them before, I was thinking AAC, but after reading that and a little looking into it I must say thank you very much, I think I'll go with that. Gotta call next week and see if my guy deals with that company

I was surprised by how quickly the total cost to get a suppressor adds up - $400 for a Pilot for my little Walther 22 was ver reasonable, but then there was the $200 fee plus about $400 to set up a gun trust. I decided to let the urge pass...

I'm in a friendly state, the $200 tax stamp will cover it. The actual units themselves aren't cheap though by any means. That's why I'm loving that idea of one unit that does different rounds.

My biggest issue now is figuring out which gun to use.

Use the Beretta, you will not need a Nielsen device, the suppressor will be cheaper I guess.
Fiocchi makes nice 158gr 9x19 rounds, I read some good reviews about these guys: http://www.thompsonmachine.net/?page_id=99 the cans are inexpensive...

I don't know anything about a neilsen, care to clue a dumb guy in? Besides that, any big reasons for Beretta over the others?

beretta 92 is a fixed barrel so you dont need a nielsen device on the suppressor. Most if not all of the more expensive suppressors allow you to swap the spring out of the suppressor for a spacer if it's built in to use/not make use of the nielsen device.

For a dedicated pistol can, the .45 Osprey is hard to beat. On 9mm the first round pop is a bit higher, but it suppresses VERY WELL overall. I urge the OP to go to silencerco's website and watch their videos. Great suppressor for .45 down to 9mm or even 380 if you want to go that way.

Not 100% True. I STILL need a booster type device on my Beretta 92 using a SWR Trident-9. Mind you it's rated for Full Auto fire, so it may be a bit heavier than some ohters, but it DOES require a booster device. The barrel doesn't "tilt" per se, but the lock up does require the barrel to be able to freely move for a very small distance to unlock the action.

You're missing out. Shooting a suppressed .22 is a LOT of fun!!

This is a picture of a Glock 35 with a 40-9 barrel conversion with the SWR Trident-9 on it along with a Walther P22 with a Gemtech Alpine on it.

The short barrel on the walther insures that even BULK High velocity .22 ammo remains subsonic. A LOT of fun in the back yard!

No need for new sights, just sight "through" the can. I use an SWR Trident on a G19 with factory sights and it works great if you keep both eyes open while shooting.

Before getting a centerfire can, I'd highly suggest a rimfire can though: more fun, cheaper to operate, nearly as quiet as the media portrays can's to be.

I've used rifle cans, and while I do actually like the idea of a 22, it won't really serve the real purpose I'm looking for. Maybe down the road.

.22 is the best to start off, but if it comes down to .45 or 9mm. I would suggest to also look at ammo prices and availabilty. I can't find subsonic 9mm for crap around here. Last time I saw some picked up all 750 rnds from Cabela's and they have not had any since.

Cheap .45 is about the same price as cheap 9mm subs. Plus .45 size hole works so you can shoot smaller bullets through it, doesn't work the other way around. 45 is sub anyway

I like the idea of a take down 9mm can so that you can clean it. AAC is a fine suppressor for 9mm platform. I own an SWR Trident-9 on my Glock and love it... but if buying today I would opt for the AAC suppressor personally. Also I would take a look at an Osprey from Silencer CO. Good outfit as well.

Ameriglo offers high set night sights to see over the can. I use a set of these and they work wonderfully.

a neilsen device is a recoil booster,
this unit allows the glock to function with a can attached to it.

the 45 is already subsonic, for a 9, you will need subsonic loads to keep the noise level down.

as far as sight, ameriglo has very tall sights , just for can.
