Training with spent shell casings?

I went to the range with a couple of friends over the weekend and one of them suggested that we practice "failure" drills with spent shell casings. His idea was to randomly put in spent shell casings in our magazines along with "live" rounds and proceed to shoot. When the spent shell got into the chamber we performed a failure drill.

My other buddy said that it wasn't a good idea and that it was better to use a "dummy" round or snap cap instead. We had neither, so my friend and I did not do the drill.

What's the expert opinion on this? Good or Bad idea?

Thanks!

Great idea to practice a failure. Nothing like tuning up for "when things go bad".
The empty would most likely fail to feed (FTF). It would not hurt anything to try one but you pretty much are going to fail.
A snap cap would feed easily from the mag.
