Got a new Sig 229 (the serial number on the box starts with "E2", but it does not have E2 on the slide) it had a date of 2010 as per the box. The item came with 3 mags, which feel gritty like they are parkerized. Upon further inspection they are stamped "Made in Italy". Is this legit?

Sounds like Mec Gar magazines. Mec Gar makes very good magazines.

My P239 mags all say "made in Italy" on them. I think my mags are from Italy, frame from Germany, and slide from New Hampshire.

ALL the SIG mags for the P229 have been made in Italy by Mec-Gar to my knowledge. Count yourself lucky. Mec-Gar magazines are some of the best in the world and used as original equipment by many gun makers.

Incidentally, when you want to buy addition magazines, you might consider buying Mec-Gar magazines that don't have "SIG-Sauer" engraved on them. They are the same quality but the standard mag is a 15-rounder instead of a 13-rounder. The nickel-plated Mec-Gars are my favorites for the P229. Without "SIG-Sauer" written on them, they cost about $10 less each.

I have about 15 magazines for my 229's and all say they are made in Italy. I have bought mags directly from sig and had them issued by my agency and some are parkerized and some have a shiny blued finish, but all are stamped the same.

Sauer & Sohn also makes mags for Sig Sauer pistols, but in the states they are fare less common than Mec Gar. they can be distinguished by a Sauer stamp and a zipper back where they get welded together. I've only seen them for 9mm P220, P225, P226 and P228/229.

I just looked at my SIG magazines (13 round/9mm) and (15 round/9mm) and both say:


"SIG SAUER"

"Mec-Gar Made in Italy"

Yup, Yup.
Most of my P220 and P239 mags are Italian.

I do have three German made 7 Round black oxide premium magazines for the SIG SAUER® P220 chambered in 45 ACP. Featuring a rubber base plate and metal follower. These are German made with dovetail rear seam. Marked "SIG SAUER" on left side. JP Sauer & Sohn logo stamped on rear.
