Dan
Check out Dan Wesson, for the $900-1500 price range, they are the one to beat. Fusion might do it but at a few more $$$. Colt is good, but it doesn't have the ramped barrel...but, this works for many. For hot loads most want ramped.
1911 and ramped barrels, the general consensus is that you're better off with a ramped barrel.
I've had some poor initial luck with Kimber, but, the gun is running fine now, a .45acp, other's swear by them, their 10mm models come with a ramped barrel.
If I were shopping today for a 1911, I'd hold off until I found a used 5" Dan Wesson, with ramped barrel, most all of them after 2008 are ramped.
If I had the $1500 I'd go for the latest model.
The D.W. CBOB with a 4.25" barrel is the perfect woods carry gun for me in the Central Rockies for animal threats under 500 pounds. It's a 10mm Commander with a bobbed tail, kind of rare but you might find one out there.
