New pistola ideas...

First, I am posting this here because I am looking for a duty-fit shooter. I am not in the game anymore, but I am looking at stuff that has been field tested. I know cops are hard on gear. I don't want alot of bells, whistles and toaster ovens. I already got that when I met ticket quotas.

Over my years on the streets, I carried mostly Sigs with a brief relationship with Glock. Glocks aren't my favorites. The gun I will take to my grave is my Sig 226DAK in .357SIG. I have also owned Sig 220, 229, 226ST and 239. Add in a G26, G19, G31, G30 and G23. That said, I am looking for something else using the following loose requirements:

- Small to medium size
- 9mm or .45 (Already have access to a G21, so that is out)
- NS preferred, but not required
- Money is limited, so keep it on the lower end of the spectrum.
- Used, but good condition, is also an option.
- Reliability is critical. When I pull the trigger, it better go bang.
- ETA: This gun is for all around. Some carry. Some range. Some house gun.

So, with those in mind, what are your suggestions in both 9mm and .45?

The question that begs is...why did you give up on .357 SIG?

You a gun ho',

I like the Springfield XD9 comparable in size to a Glock 19.

I haven't given up on it. My 226DAK is chambered in it. Its a round that has served me well. I am just looking for variety.

Someone has to be. And I fully expected you to suggest a slingshot.

What about a Sig P6? Another suggestion is a Browning HP clone or a CZ.

Something based off of a CZ75. They come DA/SA, and SA. Options include being able to carry cocked and locked even with the DA/SA versions, or with a decocker.

The all steel design has been around for a while, and has been copied by other companies (IMI, Sphynx, Tanfoglio), is used as a race gun, and have a long track record of being reliable accurate guns.

Both 9mm and 45's are made in compact versions, and I know that CZ and EEA have .22lr conversions too.

If you want something 1911, the STI Spartan series pistols come in both 9mm and 45. No bells and whistles other than good sights, and STI parts inside for around $550 new.

Other than that, if you skip the 9mm/45 requirement, maybe a S&W 66 or 67 would fulfill the role.

You could always buy a conversion barrel for it.

I was going to but then I figured you would probably shoot your eye out with it.

Look at the S&W M&P series in 45acp compact and 9mm midsized.

they fit the bill and are very tough, and not too large.

P229 or P239 if you want something in between compact and sub-compact.

Hard to imagine owning a P220 and giving it up.

Lots of truth in that.

Aftermarket night sights can be ordered. Good bang for the buck.

The second option works for me.

Colt Defender, Baby Eagle, Kahr, all have good 9MM & .45's that carry well and shoot well.

My main carry gun is a Colt New Agent in .45 (replaced a Par Ord Blackwatch LDA in .45), one of my other favorite carry guns is a Kahr MK9 98 Elite in 9MM. Most of my others are .380's.

For me, my favorite current carry/HD pistol is the used police trade-in S&W 6906, 9mm. Holds 12 rounds, has tritium sights, and goes bang every time.

I really like the 3rd Gen Smiths, and own two the 6906 and a 4586, 45 ACP, which is a little to large for everyday CC for me.

I really like the 6906/6946. I prefer the 6946 in DAO, for uniform trigger pull, and perhaps less vulnerability to being accused of an AD/ND from single action mode. If money is a concern, this would be a great option, as would be the Kahr CW9 and single stack Gen 3 Smith nines.

.45: Glock 30SF. Seriously, you'll love it. Similar in size to a 19/23 and 10 rounds of .45 +1 capacity. I shoot mine better than my 21SF, plus you already have 13 round magazines to use with it.

9mm: M&P9, M&P9c, or Glock 19. All three are excellent firearms. Although the M&P9 is a bit larger than the 19, it's still very concealable.

You shouldn't have to spend more than $600 RETAIL on any of these guns, and likely should be closer to $500 with night sights with a little bit of looking.

Seriously check in to the 30SF.

Pick what you like. I personally think the P229 SIG would be a great choice or a P239.

There is a Smith & Wesson 3953 on Gunbroker now. The high bid is about $315. I doubt that it will pull more than $350. It's about an inch longer than a Kahr P9, and 10 ounces heavier, but for belt carry, home defense, and the range, it would be a great find if cost is a factor. The 3913 in traditional double action is more common, and does not typically sell used for much more. Capacity is 8+1.
