.45 ACP and Unique

After reading a bunch of postings about Unique, I'm going to be switching over and give it a try ( been using WST, WSF, Bullseye ). So far in reading some load manuals and posts here, I've seen loads 0f 6.5/832 ( Alliant website ), 6.0/840, 6.2 and 6.6 from posts here. I'll be shooting 230 gr. FMJ out of a G30, and 200 gr. SWCL from a 5" Colt, and also from a Lone Wolf barrel in the G30 ( if they'll feed ). Is the range of 6.0-6.6 where I should be looking? I'd like to be around 800 fps from the G30 if possible. These will be used for target shooting ( informal ), practice, and plinking. I already have a SD load for SHTF/Zombies. Thanks for any input. Dave

FWIW, the 6.0 grains of Unique under a 230 gr. bullet load is a standard for .45ACP. I use it a lot. It works just fine.

Unique, while not the best metering powder in the world is one the best all around pistol powders there is. I've found that 6.0gr. pretty much duplicates a factory load with a 230gr. FMJ.

Don't even waste your time trying to feed SWC's through your G30... you'll have better luck trying to read a Korean newspaper.

I really enjoy living on the edge so I use 6.0 grains of Unique with my 230 grain LRN.

You only live once right?

6.5gr of Unique and 230gr Rainier FMJ's are what I use in my Sig P220's. They shoot great.

I don't like to see anyone take a step backward so I'll say stick with WST or WSF. You're already better off.

I love me some Unique & lead bullets in anything, but Tj is right, for light to std vel 45acp, it doesn't get much better than WST. Unique is a good +P choice or if you just have to use it, works fine. 6gr w/ 230gr lead & 6.5gr w/ 230gr FMJ (Ranier & Berry's are plated & run inbetween those), pretty nuch ball equiv.

I run 6.2 grains under my Berry's flat nose 200 gr.bullets and shoot happily every time. That bullet won't feed in my G36 but my 1911's love it.

Unique and .45's just go together.

I agree. But I just bought a new large container of Unique and am using it for .38, .45acp and .45lc. My cases are coming out regardless of Ruger Vaqueros or Colt 1911, black and dirty around the outside of the mouth. It didn't used to be like that. Bullseye & Trail Boss don't leave the black. Has the Unique formula changed?

You are probably running below mid range & not getting enough case expansion to stop the blow back. I tried Unique when I first started CAS, to slow for the light loads often used, so I dropped down to RedDot. It has good loft, & runs in my 12ga fine too.

Thanks for all the info. One question. I'm looking to get up close to SD loadings such as Cor-Bon or Critical Defense which I assume are in the +P range. Can Unique be used to get close to these loads? I'd like to be able to practice with loads that come close to those I carry for SD. TIA. Dave++

Good Point. I had not even thought about that. We don't load real heavy for the CAS matches.

That is for sure! There are a lot of shooters using just enough powder to get the bullet out of the bbl! I haven't been shooting CAS for about 10yrs now, but used to use a 200grLFP o/RD for about 750fps. A full power load compared to some of those 38sp loads I see used.

Yes, you can safely push Unique into the +P range. Getting a 185gr JHP to 1000fps is not diff.
