Rough draft for letter to Congressman (any good?)

Dear

As you are aware there is a national debate going on about supposed “gun control.” Honor your oath to protect the United States Constitution and vote NO! Our Constitutional rights have been infringed upon far enough through egregious bills such as the “Patriot Act” and the “National Defense Authorization Act” etc. I will not vote for anyone in the future who threatens to take away Constitutional rights of the people even if it is popular at the time. We are a nation of laws, a Republic. Please keep in mind that the Constitution does not grant our rights (which are inalienable God-given rights). The language in the bill of rights binds the Government against taking actions that deny these basic liberties to the people.

If your true goal is to protect our children, then enact legislation that will do that. Banning firearms that are rarely used in crime (less than 1% of the time) is not going to stop such tragedies; this was proven in 1999 when the Columbine shooting took place under the 1994 ban. Do something meaningful, please. Make committing the insane easier. Put armed security guards in our schools. But do not strip us of our rights and property by passing additional anti-gun laws that have historically had no positive effect on crime in our nation or others.

[I wrote the first paragraph, the second is a shameless cut and paste from Sturmwehgre who didn't mind us using it]

I'll take a stab. Because a shot might be illegal.... /gun banning humor

"I will not vote for anyone in the future who threatens to take away Constitutional rights of the people even if it is popular at the time"

...I will not vote for anyone in the future who votes to infringe upon the Constitutional rights of the people when it is explicitly forbidden in the document you have sworn to uphold.

Washington and the politicians who serve there have become insulated from the struggles of civilians. Very few Americans have security officers in their places of employment or a security detail. Those Americans without such luxuries are the people that are responsible for their own safety as well as that of their families. Those are the people that proposals such as this would harm, and they're are also the people that you represent. Those are the people that vote to keep you in office, and can just as easily vote to give it to someone who won't betray them. Despite the political opportunity to ban all modern firearms, know that it is not popular amongst the majority of the population. It will not decrease crime, and it will not bring anyone back to life whose life was senselessly taken in a shooting.

"Please keep in mind that the Constitution does not grant our rights (which are inalienable God-given rights)."

...our rights, but our rights are inalienable and God-given.

Bill of Rights is a proper noun.
