My 650 review - first 200 rounds (UPDATED. PICS)

UPDATE - Now that I have the 550 also on there and things cleaned up (for the most part), thought I would include some pics. Scroll down to post #23 for those. Didn't see any reason to start a new thread...

Well, finished my "remodel" of my bench, lowered it, stained it, and 2 coats of urethane. Installed the 650 with strong mount last night... did evertything except verify the powder charge which I did this morning. Interesting.... I had to "bump up" the setting, it was throwing almost .3 grains less than I thought it was on the 550. Not sure if transferring it made the difference or what? That was observation #1.

Anyway, once I got that set I slowly started loading some rounds. After about 30, it seemed pretty easy. Went ahead and load 200 up. Second observation... don't really like the ergonomics of the bullet bin as attached to the strong mount by Dillon's design. Seemed to high to me. I was constantly holding my left arm up too much, was getting a cramp in it.

My press is fairly high I think. I sit on a bar stool, and the handle (I have the aluminum 'L' handle instead of the ball) is just at or above shoulder height. I think that's what Dillon recommends. I think I'm going to see if I can adjust that bin down and back, or I'll end up taking it off and using my old tupperware bowl and sit it on top of something of the right height.

But overall, the press ran exceedingly smooth and trouble free. The casefeeder worked flawlessly, the priming system worked great... everything. Oh... I *did* do the "snapping shellplate" mod where you clip some of the spring for the ball detent, and added the bearing. Made a big difference. Even though I'm using TG right now, which doesn't take much... I could see powder jumping up above the case before the mod and don't see that now. Big difference.

Learned a great trick for disabling the casefeeder while there are still cases in the tube. Before starting a loading session, I like to throw powder 10 times to make sure it's good. But I didn't want cases to keep coming. I wanted to manually insert a case at station 2, throw the powder, extract from station 3, and repeat.

The trick: Manually move the case feeder "arm" in with your right hand, catching the case with your left that is going to fall out. While still holding that arm in, insert a .38 or .357 magnum case upside down in that little gap. It prevents the arm from swinging out and letting another case fall in. Found this via video on youtube (
)

Other than that, still need to pick up some tubing to put over the primer "ski ramp", and that's about it !!

My bench area is still a mess, I have yet to install my 550 on there. Once I've done that, I'll take some pics and maybe post an "after 2000 round" review.

Great news. I was thinking about you last night, wondering when this post was coming. I need to try the .357 case idea. Sounds perfect. I would assume a .38 case would work.

Not 100% positive but I think I drilled a different hole in the strong mount for the bullet tray. My left hand palm hardly never leaves resting on the front of the bullet tray. I never could get use to loading sitting on a stool. I found I have better control and see what is going on a lot better standing.
My bullet tray is at a 16 degree angle the front being lower and even with the bottom of the platform.
My roller handle is about even with the bottom of my arm pit. But I think it could be about an inch lower than that. The way I hold the handle is my thumb and first finger are on the shaft and the next three fingers are on the roller part of the handle. To me it is a lot more comfortable doing it that way. Also the handle is at a slight backward slant. I also stand to the left of the press so I can easily see station 3 and 1.

The press is probably too high. People on this forum are obsessed with mounting their presses in the stratosphere. I have mine on a strong mount because it came with it. I am very tempted to remove the SM and have the thing at a normal height.

BOB,

What are the two extra tubes coming out of your case feeder for?

If you look on your case feeder you will see two holes in the back. They are there to clear media or anything that might have made it into the case feeder. If you ever have any media on your loading table you know what Im talking about. I just took 2 .22 magnum cases that I found at the range cut of the base. Made the holes in the case feeder a little bigger but the cases flush or just below flush in the case feeder, slide the vinyl tubing over the case and ran them down to the spent primer box that sits under the press. No more media all over the reloading table.

The right height is the right height. It's different for everyone. I stand. I don't use a stool. So mine is higher. I think Dillon and other have it right when they say the handle is at shoulder height.

I usually set the height, by making sure when the handle is at the bottom of the stroke, with the ram all the way up, my arm is almost locked at the elbow, and I don't have to hunch over.

I think how high someone wants a press, is going to vary from person to person... even if two people are standing or two are sitting.. it's just a preference thing.

ron59.. Hope you continue to have good luck with your 650. It's a GREAT press. I'm hoping my schedule slows down a bit so I can hit the range next weekend, but I'm not real optimistic..

Yes, .38 will work as well.

Edited my OP to reflect that, as well as to post the link to the youtube video where I saw this. He's long-winded, but shows exactly how to do it in case my verbal description isn't clear.

If someone broke into my house and raised or lowered my press by 6" I would just figure my wife messed with my chair. I'd reach down and pull the lever that adjusts the height of the chair and not think anything of it.

This is what I use sometimes it is about 3:45 into the video. I must say he does a lot of things the hard way.

I didn't watch that video, but are you talking about that bent wire that he puts in there? That was what I was going to use, until I stumbled across the video in my OP. That is way simpler, as I had some .38/.357 brass available. Much simpler method, IMHO.

Do you have the link for using the case? It does sound simpler.

I use a piece of metal coat hanger with a section of plastic tubing wrapped around it. I don't have time to take and post a pic as I am headed out to the range but will tonight.

The link to the youtube video is in my original post? It's a fairly short video, all it shows is how to place that empty case to disable the casefeeder.

I have to think it's way easier/simpler than the bent wire thing. I was intending on doing that, and when I stumbled across this, thought "Yeah, that's the ticket!" (With apologies to Jon Lovitz.)

I'm so lazy I figured whatever it was you were talking about would be more work than just picking out the cases as they get fed in one at a time. I am so lazy I almost didn't click on your link, thinking it involved bending wire with my bare hands. Then I figured I would bend some wire just to spite C4W. The method in your link doesn't even require me to roll my chair to another part of the room, I can reach a 38 case from any spot in my bunker.
