G30 Comp-Tac Minotaur Review

I received a Comp-Tac Minotaur for my G30 for Christmas and I wanted to post a review as well as a follow-up later.

The holster construction was superb. Nice leather, nice stitching, quality hardware. However, as Jimmy McMillan would say, "the holster is too damn tight!"

It was a very, very tight fit, even after adjusting the tension screws all the way out (to the point where they would probably drop out on their own). I let the pistol sit in the holster overnight and worked it in and out a few dozen times. Next day, still super tight, and this isn't even with me trying it inside my waistband with the extra tension of the pants and a belt. I looked online and saw other people were having some similar issues and they offered solutions. One method was to place the pistol in a ziploc baggie to give it a small amount of extra thickness and then let that sit in the holster overnight - so I tried that. Next day, still too damn tight.

By this time I figured "what the heck, I'll try it on anyhow". Put the rig in my jeans, cinched my belt up and...I think you could lift me off the ground by the butt of the pistol and it would still not come out.

Comp-Tac has a reputation for excellent customer service so I sent it back with a letter explaining the issue. I'm local to Texas so I hope to hear back in the next few days and I'll post an update. I'm thinking it was just a one-off problem as lots of people seem to be very happy with their Comp-Tac holsters. It really does look like a high-quality holster so I'd really love to be able to use it.

UPDATE
I received my holster back from Comp-Tac today. The fit is MUCH better than before but it is still a little snug for my taste (although this is probably how it is designed to fit and I'm spoiled from all-Kydex holsters).

I'm going to give it a few days to "break in" but I can already tell the draw is improved. I'll also tweak the adjustment screws as they are actually tight this time. Great customer service from Comp-Tac and they sent me a hat for my troubles!

Common problem with the Minotaur. I have purchased 4 of them and 3 were like you describe. I sent 2 back and sold the 3rd. Equally annoying is the dimple in the trigger area on the kydex shell that acts as a detent. They are often too deep and some actually have a shoulder on the tailing edge, which is the leading edge on removal. This "shoulder" makes it immposible to remove the weapon once it's holstered and in your britches. My e-mails to Comp-Tac result in "Gee, you are the only one who has problems with our products."
I do love the holsters after I "adjust" them and I really like the fact that I can have 6 different shells to accomodate a variety of handguns.

Trade it for a CB Supertuck and you'll be all set

I have a Crossbreed SuperTuck for another pistol (a Taurus 24/7....I know, I know, but it hasn't let me down yet). It is a nice holster for sure, but I feel that the Comp-Tac is just a notch higher in quality and finish.

I reaaally want the Comp-Tac to work so we'll see when I receive my new one or repaired one. If the new/repaired one doesn't work I'll probably go with another CB holster.

The only problem I've ever had with excess retention was the trigger guard dimple on my P30 shell. A little work with a heat gun reduced the dimple and problem was solved.

The other problem I had was the two shell mounting holes on one side didn't line up properly so I had to expand them. While the Minotaur is still my favorite holster it's disappointing to have these kinds of basic QC problems. That and the stupid "Gen 1 vs Gen 2" backing issue from a year ago.

Makes you wonder if the wrong BUCK was used to form it.
My G-17 sized MTac has alway had great retension (I have read of some being too lose)
I hope you get it resolved, to your satisfaction, and soon.

I'm not sure what the issue is. I saw a youtube video of a Comp-Tac holster where the wrong Kydex mold might have been used (link here) but mine seems to fit well in the Kydex shell with no bulging away from the backing like in the video. It is just too darn tight! I have a cheap local-made holster that is similar to a Crossbreed that I'm using for my G30 and while the retention is snug, it is manageable and I can draw from an IWB position comfortably. I think the Kydex might be a little too snug on mine and added to the leather backing, the friction is just too much.

There is no way I can draw comfortably with that rig but Comp-Tac has an excellent reputation and I hear their customer service is second to none. I spoke with a rep on the phone and they were very helpful so I have no doubt they will do what they can to help me out.

I'll post an update as soon as I know what the next steps are. I was seriously impressed with the construction of the Comp-Tac holster and I own several from other brands like Don Hume, Galco and Crossbreed.

The solution to your problem is a custom all leather holster from a reputable leathersmith.

Too bad some of you guys have had bad experiences. I have 2 MTAC's and the gun fit for both are outstanding. Easy in/out, but with great retention. I'm sure Comp-tac will make it right. They took care of me when I had a mag holder that didn't fit. Took it back for credit, no questions asked but with apologies for my having had any problem or inconvenience.

The M-tac will loosen with use. I gaurantee it, all of mine did.
It really is a great holster and much improved vs the Inbreed with it's uncovered muzzle and silly crosses on the clips.
Keep at it, you will be glad you own it!

But of course, in kydex

Dont rely on adjustable retention screws.
No kydex holster should "break in" IMO.

I meant "break in" because of the leather (the Minotaur is a hybrid holster). It will loosen as the leather portion of the holster compresses to fit the form of the pistol. I can already tell it is a little looser than it was. I'm going to hang onto it for a while and see how I like it over time. If I end up not liking it, keep an eye out in the classifieds!

I have an mtac holster for my G30 and it has been a perfect fit right out of the box. It fit my Gen 4 G21 also.
