Scrooge on trail cam
My wife and I went to pull some of my cams from the national forest the other day. When I walked up to the first cam I noticed something strange. Something/someone had untied the tag end of my python cable lock. I started to tie these extra tight after having a bear chew on one. When we got closer I noticed that someone had pulled a very tight stick out from behind the bear safe, breaking it in half in the attempt to loosen the bear safe.
Now if attempting to steal a mans property is not bad enough, try doing it on Christmas Eve
messing with the stick and lock
Trying to hide some fingerprints??
Let's walk back to my blue Toyota pick up truck and maybe come back later?
The camera he was trying to steal was a Spypoint IR-6 in Custom 1 bear safe.

Some people just have no excuse for the things they do, and I have no problem hoping for nothing but the worse for such individuals... Admittingly I have destroyed some equipment used to catch fish in an illegal manner when I've gotten caught up on them... This is on waterways that couldn't sustain the greed of self centered so-called outdorsman trying to mass harvest, and I will continue to do so without guilt... Conversely speaking, if a man is trying to game hunt/fish in an ethical manner and isn't bothering anyone else, I sincerely wish him the best with his outings and will help such a man if need be...
This ticks me off, and it's not even my camera or my State...

I hate that..
But have to say, if it was me, I would have had that camera (NOT saying I would steal one, just saying.. bears don't use tools). I like the idea of a bear box, but honestly, I could have that thing off in seconds with either my small axe or rifle. But glad that idiot didn't think any harder than a bear.

Yeah, there just designed to be bear resistant but I guess the next generation ones need to be engineered to be @$$h01e proof...

A few seconds?
It is a 11 gauge steel box that is lag bolted to the tree with hardened lag bolts from inside the box. The python cable is pretty much for looks for low life people. The padlock on the side is a shrouded master lock.
Not saying it can't be stolen but it will take you longer then a couple of seconds.

You would be surprised what you can do with an axe in just a few swings. I hate thiefs, thank god you had the cable and safe on it though.

Is it permissible to lag bolt game cameras to a tree in the NF?

Yeah, o.k. I put my cams so far back that most lazy people do not walk that far. Much less walk back to your truck for bolt cutters to cut a shrouded master lock.

No difference then putting in tree steps. It can not be permanent though and these are not as they have moved 5 miles since these were taken.

If I really wanted the camera, I would cut down the tree.

This has happened at least twice near my friends land. Like all the theft countermeasures, make it as hard as you can.
