'Synching' Desktop PC and Laptop?

Is there an 'easy' way to regularly 'synch' my PC and my laptop via the wireless home network so that only the changed files get updated? It's presently a PITA to remember to copy the various folders, etc, when I need them to be current.

I should know this answer, but my mind is foggy on the details...

Thanks.

Pretty sure that both RichCopy and Robocopy will do this for you... and they are free!

Just be Very Careful with the mirroring command... that has bitten me hard before... and it wasn't pretty!

Does that help you?

LOL... I guess that depends on if I have to use the 'mirroring' command to do the synch process.

I'll check them out and let you know.

Thanks!

I gotta tell ya - I have been using this for years and it just works. It's intuitive, lots of logical AND's, OR's, time, date, size, criteria to help you make it more of a "smart" sync. Exceptions if the same file resides on both sides, logging, it is really slick.

You can save the sync profiles and incorporate them into scripts, schedule them, etc.

Great tool - and pretty cheap. The few times I have e-mailed support, the developer himself contacted me promptly - usually within an hour or two.

Check it out.
(no, I have no relation or interest in this guys business other than it a great product I use regularly)

If you are talking about information that doesn't need to be 100% secure, I suggest Dropbox. It allows me to push pictures between laptop, phone and family computer in another state.

If you need something secure, be very careful.

There's some fantastic info here, and I'll keep a copy of this thread for future reference. Thanks!

However, and call me what you want, but I don't want any of my info to intentionally leave the premises... i.e., no 'cloud' or online services... at least not for this info. I don't trust their security enough, or my ability to ever actually delete anything that's been put out there.

I will choose one of these for use when sending large amounts of info to someone else, or for if I'm traveling and need things from a drive at home, etc.

Thanks again!

Check out allwaysync. You can sync over a LAN, VPN, or FTP which you control - no cloud needed.

Buy an external HD and use its software to back up one and restore to another. That way you also have a back-up to put in a secure place.

Ah.

Also check out Microsoft's SyncToy. It's free & seems to work fairly well, but I've only done very limited testing. Friendly interface though.
