Okay...don't know much about the 1911-style guns other than they are expensive and they all resemble the original to varying degrees.

I held a Ruger SR1911 last week and liked the feel, but what's wrong with it? Is this just brand snobbery with everyone needing a Colt or Kimber to feel satisfied, or is there more to it?

Just curious...

I'm a G.I. kind of guy, so until Ruger comes out with a 1911 that's all one color and doesn't have extended doo-dads on it... I'd go with the Remington. I like the Remington overall, save only the roll marks and shiny finish. That is assuming I have to buy one of the three listed. If not, I'd snag a G.I. version from Norinco or Armscor, and spend the difference on adding some decent sights and a long trigger, then I'd call it a day.

I would be hard-pressed to tell you since I own each.

Remington 1911-R1 Enhanced and Remington 1911-R1

RUGER SR1911

S&W 1911 Tactical Rail Series SS

They are all fine pistols. If you are looking for the most for your money between the three of them, I would have to say the RUGER. However, the RUGER is a scarce pistol these days. I recently picked up the Remington 1911-R1 Enhanced and am I very impressed with it.

It is that way sometimes...
There is nothing wrong with any of these 1911's. They are good guns and either one will be fine.
Understand the differences though.

I personally don't care for the series 80 style firing pin block.
Not that it hurts the trigger because I don't think it does enough to matter.
I just don't like the part about taking them apart and putting them back together again. The Remmington uses this system.

I like 1911's that are traditional and more along the lines of the Mil-Specs.
The S&W uses an external extractor (I believe?) and I like the "normal" extractors.

The Ruger would be my first choice but it is not a Mil-Spec with the enhancements such as the beavertail grip safety and the extended controls, different hammer. But this is the one I would go with of the three.

After studying the buyer's guide that Brian worked so hard on it will be up to you to decide which one is right for you.

Of those three, I'd choose the Ruger. The S&W is non-traditional and the Remingtons are pretty rough. The Ruger is not the smoothest 1911 out of the box, but is the best choice of those three.

However, Springfield is the gun to have if you only own one 1911. Colt's is the next in line for your second 1911. After that get a Ruger if it blows your skirt up.

For a shooter I would be very happy with S&W.
It established itself as pretty damn reliable pistol already.
I have no idea about the other two though. Too early to say I guess.

Thanks for the info, that makes sense. Perhaps someone can tell me why these style pistols are so expensive? The Ruger that I held last week was selling for $700, which seems like a lot for a run of the mill automatic handgun. This is $250 more than I paid for my G19 brand new with night sights! What makes them so expensive? The steel frame?

Depends though upon your intent though as well. But weighing it all out, the Ruger would probably be the best overall buy.

Sounds like you may be pretty new to the 1911 world, and quite possibly guns in general. Not being mean or a smartass, that's just what I gathered from your posts. There's a lot to learn, but this is definately a great place to ask questions and get answers. Welcome to GT.

Not being a smartass at all, I appreciate everyone's input. I have been shooting for about ten years now, and much of that experience has been in varius places I've been with in the Army. Still active duty, but now stationed in Wisconsin as a recruiter so I don't do much training anymore. I've always been a budget minded shooter, which is part of the reason why I sold my .40 cal XD to get a 9mm Glock so I could shoot more! I have fired a 1911 style handgun as well as the majority of common calibers in recent years, as well as some less common ones like the .50 BMG. But with the wide variety of firearms out there I simply don't know everything about everything, which is why I love spending time on forums such as these.

I sincerely appreciate everyone who takes the time to respond, as this is how I learn more!

Being budget minded and 1911's is hard to do.

Seriously though, there are alot of great 1911's in the Glock/XD/M&P price range. Truthfully, most 1911's in the $1000 range are considered middle of the road type 1911's. Brain (bac1023) has a 1911 Guide that he has in his signature line. Give it a look. Lots of useful information on 1911's starting at the "bottom tier" models and working up. Don't think for a minute that if you don't pay a ton of money for a 1911 that it won't be accurate or reliable. But with 1911's, as in life, you get what you pay for. Now there is a fine line on where you start to "over pay" for what you are getting with a 1911, but that's a whole other can of worms to open up. LOTS of varied opinions on that topic.
