Remington R-25, .308 20" ,Camo, no muzzle break

Hey...I'm looking at a Remington R-25 .308 20" no muzzle break...

I want a .308 semi but live in California (So Ca) and the .308 semis easily available here (other than Springfileld M1s) are the pricey ones like a Lewis @ $2.9K (lot of money in my mind).

The R-25 is $1.4K...

Opinions on the gun?

If you know of other <$2K, .308 semi alternatives in So CA (other tha Saigas) you think are better, let me know... I like Remington as a company but not married to this gun.

(please don't turn this into a California law pissing contest; it is, what it is...)

Armalite AR-10 if it is legal there. Budsgunshop.com & Cheaper than Dirt sell them. Does DPMS make the R-25 for Remington?

I have a DPMS LR-308B that I have tricked out to make it basically a SASS. The DPMS 308 got rifle of the year a couple of years ago. Look at the DPMS SASS, also the 308L, 308B and AP4 are fine guns. They are very good for the money. Crucial to use PMags in the gun. The Remington you are looking at is a fine gun as well. I might buy one soon. Remington owns Bushmaster and DPMS. So the SR -25 you are looking at is made by DPMS it's just has Remington name. For the money you are on the right path with any decision you make. Just about any of the AR style 308's out there now are very good guns.

While it is black and certainly less than $2K, it might not be evil enough...

if in your shoes I'd go with an M1a/m14 type myself. Remington got into ar's after the umbrella company cerebrus later named freedom gorup consolidated a bunch of companies including dpms, bushmaster remington and several others into one large company, so you are essentially buying a dpms/bushmaster gun.

We can get them (w/ bullet button). However, I would like a rifle scope ready w/ a rail.

I read that PTR's don't cycle on a lot of the cheap ammo... kind of scared me away.

All of the above are nice.

Any experience w/ mounting a scope on a FAL or PTR?

e.g. The primary reason I don't like Springfiled M1's is the scope mount... Much rather have a picatinny rail so I can mix and match easily w/ other rifles and not have to mess w/ the rings.

My PTR-91 will cycle all the ammo that I can feed it with very positive ejection of the spent brass. The only exception to this is soft point ammo. The rifle ends up jamming and then double feeding with any soft point ammo. Also, you won't be able to reload the brass if that's a concern. Otherwise, it's a great shooter. I just got one of the mil-surp Hensoldt scopes with the built in qd mount (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/SCP971-1.html) for mine and can't wait to try it out.

Can't reload because the case is tweaked?

The chamber has flutes in it to make extraction easier, when fired the brass is pressed against the flutes which are hard to iron out during reloading. End result is fewer firing. Some guys I know will shoot their reloads out of the PTR only when they're ready to get new brass.

I'll say!!! Also, be sure to get a lane on the far right of the range as your brass will be ejected several lanes over. Saving you the grief of learning the hard way, or rather the people on your right learning that you're shooting a PTR.
