Anyone know how common wide hammer M10's are?

I ran across a mint condition 10-5 today with a wide hammer.

Thanks

By wide hammer I think you mean target hammer. A S&W Model 10 with a target hammer is kind of an oxymoron.

A model 10 is a fighting handgun. The target hammer is for cocking back and shooting single action. Common on K 22 and K38's used for bullseye shooting when revolvers ruled.

BAC, it is not hard to change out hammers and triggers. I suspect that is what you saw. If you had a factory letter stating such it would be very unusual.

True, but the customer could have ordered it that way.

Yes they could but why AND if so how much would that add to it's value?

If you saw two identical Model 10's. one "normal" and the other with factory target hammer would you pay:

$10 more..?

$50 more...?

$100 more....?

$200 more.....?

This one is just not in the book. My way of thinking is unless the seller proves it left the factory with a target hammer it just a Model 10 that been modified and I would price it as such.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't pay any more, actually. Its only priced at $300.

I was just curious about it.

$300 is a good price for a clean S&W Model 10. I know it is primo or you wouldn't be looking at it.

It was not uncommon for triggers and hammers to be swapped out in the '70's. I doubt that it came from the factory that way. A $10 part plus a $10 bill to the gunsmith and you too can have a 'target model 10'!
