I'm looking for a good holster for my Glock 17. I want something that I can pull up quick and something that isn't going to scratch my slide. Should I go leather or plastic? Another thing, since I'm looking for a quick draw, do I want a release button on the holster? All recommendations are welcome.

Where and how do you want to carry it? In waist, on the belt, appendix? is this for range, ccw? All of those make a big difference in what kind of holster you need.

No not for concealment just recreational use. Therefore I want something on the belt for a quick draw.

I was just going to suggest a Fobus Paddle holster. They're inexpensive and easy on, easy off. Some folks say that the poly holsters ware the finish but I've never noticed it. Also, a leather holster with dirt inside of it will ware the finish too so it's pretty much 12 to one, half a dozen to the other.

The best wearing holster that I have found is a Milt Sparks 55BN. This holster is leather. Bruce Nelson was the inventor of this holster. This design has been copied by almost everyone in the holster business. This holster isn't cheap, and is high quality.

There are no safeties to interfer with the draw of the weapon.

Glock almost never "scratch" due to the tennifer, but the matte finish well wear. As far as wear on the finish, if you carry a gun it's going to have wear. If you don't want a worn finish leave the gun at home.

If you buy one or two good quality holster in the long run you'll save a good deal of money over buying lesser quality holster.

Another option is the Milt Spark's SSII. This is another Bruce Nelson design. I have a SSII for each of my guns.

While Milt Sparks makes top-grade holsters, the cost (and 20+ week wait time) is far more than someone looking for a basic range holster really needs. I would second the earlier suggestions for Fobus - just avoid the Blackhawk Serpa holsters.

+1 Glocks have tough finishes but holsters will wear finish.

Seriously just try it... for $25, I promise it will be the best general holster you even used. Its IDPA and USPSA legal also. It has good enough retention that you can do cartwheels in it, but its fast enough to compete with comp-tac or blade-tech.

I am unaware of any holster that doesn't wear the finish over time. I guess you could find some sort of "skeletonized" competition holster to minimize it. Having many leather and plastic holsters, I would give my nod to Kydex for smooth draw and easier reholstering.

DrBob I have to say those Garrett holsters look great. So if I went with one of the STX's, what part do I need for a fully adjustable cant? And can you tell me the difference between the STX and STX Auto?

I find it hard to justify expensive leather holsters for my Glocks. I just got some generic Bianchi pressed foam Accumold holsters for them and called it a day.
